Usability Question: global MusicFolder?

Postby acroyear » Sat Feb 06, 2016 2:43 am

Since 5.0ish, the Subsonic Web UI has basically maintained a default global MusicFolder - set it in Indexes (previously the left sidebar in <=5.3) and it applies to the home Albums grid. With 6.0, it is possibly to apply a music folder to ID3 browsing as well, but the web ui doesn't support that. If you only have one music folder, then it nicely conceals the choice from you.

With SubFire, I initially opted not to do that. The Folders browsing always starts with all MusicFolders and one has to be selected to see indexes; the Albums page stores its own music folder, but that doesn't affect the Folders at all. I am in the middle of looking at MusicFolders in Artists (a new 6.0 feature), and thus comes the question of which is better: each keeping their last choice independently, or having a single global one that affects all screens (but hopefully can be changed on all screens, rather than forcing one to go back to a specific page to change it).

So, any thoughts on this?
