Artist Singles

Postby karlito » Sun Mar 19, 2017 7:02 pm

Just curious as to how fellow subsonic users account for singles by a given artist? I have an artist folder, with albums in it. I then created a folder called "Singles" for all the unreleased, or non album music. I'm not a fan of this approach because subsonic treats that "Singles" folder as an album. So how do you guys handle this issue?

I just put the tracks in one folder per single.
So I get:
Artistfolder
---- Single folder 1
---- Single folder 2
---- Album folder 1
---- Album folder 2
If you create one folder for all tracks from various singles than Subsonic will index this folder as just another album.

Just like Toolman listed above, but I make sure to label and tag the MP3 songs and the folder they reside in with details of the release.

Artistfolder
---- Single folder 1 (12" limited edition single) [France]
---- Single folder 2 (7" promo single) [UK]
---- Album folder 1
---- Album folder 2

I start by faking it as a "Greatest Hits" folder first, and find some album artwork for a greatest hits/best of to use. The exception are those that are definite one-hit-wonders, as I'll just name the album the same as the single and find the 45's sleeve art (yeah, much of my singles collection is 80s music), usually off wikipedia.

If I find I see the "greatest hits" cover too much, I sometimes break them up by song name, or by original albums even if I don't have the rest of the album. As noted, you can't do that for non-album singles (Mike Oldfield has no shortage of those, for example, like Mistake and Pictures in the Dark).

@Acroyear:
Pictures in the dark and Mistake are both on The Platinum Collection 2006.

I think that's why my artist-root folders are seen as albums and the singles are tagged accordingly. That will be a crapload of work to out everything in a single-folder :o

I'm not that fanatic about my music.
If an artist has had some singles that are not on an album I just create a folder Singles and drop the files there.
But that's because I really don't care on what single and in what year a song was released.
You may be more structural in that, so yes, that's going to be a PITA.
