Performance

Hi,
Could you share something about performance of WebSonic?

I did notice the statement on Subsonics page that it can handle 100000+ files, but we would need to handle information for up to 1 million songs. Do we know what the 100000 limitation is from -- is it based on database speed, hard drive capacity, or is that simply all that it has been tested with?

Could you share some proven examples about this?

Thanks and Regards,
HuyNguyen

100,000+ isn't a limit. You're misinterpreting what that statement means. It means more than 100,000, not less than.

Most people run private sites with Subsonic, not public ones. The best way to know if it's going to work on your collection is just to install it and see. AFAIK, there is no limit but millions of tracks is rather uncommon in personal collections. I personally have gone over the 100,000 tracks as well without any issues, just know that it will take a long time to build the search index for such a large collection. Other than that the artist index on the left could take a noticeable amount of time to load if you don't have it broken down into more granular structure than a flat organization with all artists in the same music folder.

Just a couple of comments :-)

Yes, 100,000 is by no means a limit - it's just the biggest collection I have tested Subsonic with.

The initial creation of the search index will take some time, but it runs in the background. Incremental updates to the search index will be fast, as it only considers files that have changed since last time. That too runs in the background.

And yes, the artist list will take a bit longer to generate. However, the next version of Subsonic (3.7) contains some serious optimizations of this. Please read this post for more details.
