Audio Books ...

Postby FlexQ » Sat Dec 14, 2019 6:53 pm

Hi,

I have recently begun to listen to audiobooks, and in my infantile wisdom installed the Booksonic server, to run the subsonic and the booksonic server in parallel, however, that sucked greatly.
One stopped the other, it was not a pretty sight.

The reason why I search for a book server, is that i cant seem to find a functionality in subsonic to record the place where a certain track has been stopped / paused. This is a quite essential feature for a audio book application.

SO my question is this: Is there something that I have missed ? Can I actually record where i stopped listening last time?
If not, is there an application for the subsonic server that can do that for me?

- Thanks

Note: The reason for me starting to listen to audio books is that i have a newborn who can only sleep while being in the stroller ... which gives me alot of hours each day where I can only listen to audio books.

Automatic saving of a bookmark or play queue is something individual apps can do, but no, the main UI doesn't do it itself. The load and save "Play Queue" feature in the player's iframe (the bottom one) i know will save the queue along with the point in the file you were last listening to, and restore it correctly.

The API supports a 'bookmark' feature but the main page doesn't use it.

DSub for android I know will always remember where you left off.

I'm thinking of making an audio-book optimized app in the SubFire family (I have lots of Big Finish audio dramas like Doctor Who to listen to), but it is low in priority over other projects I have in my head right now. SubFire 2's (see the suite page in my signature) bookmarks feature DOES work for remembering the files queued up and the location in the file you were at when you clicked the bookmark icon. It just doesn't do it automatically - you have to remember to click the bookmark icon before you leave.

If you're on iphone/ipad, i can't speak for which apps might support the bookmark feature. Maybe someone can chime in with which apps might suit your needs there.

I use Subsonic to download the files, but then have Smart Audiobook Player (Android) do the rest. It is what works for me, but curious what other solutions exist.

Why don't you set up a virtual machine and install booksonic on that one?
I once had 3 different subsonic servers running on 1 pc with 3 virtual machines.

SubFire's apps support bookmarks (including restoring the whole queue of what you were playing at the time it was added, though 'shuffles' from subfire radio get re-shuffled), and (on the same device) remembering where you left off if you 'resume playing'.

So if you started an album (meaning a book with chapters as 'songs'), it will remember the whole album and put it back in the queue to continue. I have some more improvements in mind to optimize book-reading, but I'm working on a playlist editor first.

(SubFire's apps are web apps that are optimized as Progressive Web Apps for Android platforms. They work on IOS but with some limitations.)
