I haven't used z-subsonic but I like iSub's interface better, from what I've seen...navigating around resembles the standard iPod interface more closely, so one less esoteric thing to learn as far as my feeble brain is concerned. I didn't cast a vote because I can't really compare the two, but thought I'd put my two cents in anyway.

i have both

I paid and have tried both, I like iSub better, but coming from Simplify Media I have a little higher expectations about the 3G streaming. I still like Simplify Media as an iPhone app better, but I have no choice when it shuts down in the near future.

The main difference between the two is interface, the isub interface is easier to look at and resembles that of simplify media. The second main difference is z-subsonic will cache the songs locally so they can be brought up instantly with no delay or skipping.

They both have some work to do on 3G streaming, I can understand why Simplify Media would dumb down the bitrate at 128kb/s at the highest simply because anything over that seems to not stream well while mobile. Another thing I can't stand that I learned to love in simplify is the song change. In simplify the songs would change from one to another in a row, not manually switching, seamlessly. Almost like it would buffer the next song, which is awesome in a 3G streaming application.

My opinion, iSub is the next best iphone streaming app. I hope that it will out-do the simplify media app in looks, and functionality, and prevail. The subsonic web based streamer is a awesome application and I'd love to always use one without having 3 different applications to do the same thing on 3 different hardware or OS devices.

I bought Z-subsonic but I can't say I'm loving it, I'm going to give iSub a try...

isub is the best one i think. much better user interface and about the song catching/buffering, the creator of isub says he's rewriting it and also support downloading songs for offline playing in version 2.2 that should be out in a couple of weeks or so.

Initially I bought z-subsonic and was somewhat happy with it. Then I purchased iSub v1. The iSub interface is much easier to use and better looking, however at the time you had to be connected to wifi to stream... since the release of v2 you can now stream over 3g.

Originally I was just happy to have streaming media with z-subsonic, but since iSub has brought 3g streaming into the mix, I haven't opened z-subsonic once.

If I were you, go with iSub... besides, each app is less than $5. So perhaps $10 total for all the streaming audio you could want, absolutely worth it.

Now if only I could use iSub for video as well! (AirVideo will stream to the iphone btw)

z-subsonic all the way

Postby whimpyjones » Sun Apr 25, 2010 2:29 pm

Purchased both, have used both extensively. I enjoy the interface of z-subsonic the best and the deciding factor for me is the implementation of playlist support. I like that I can cue up songs in a playlist on the iphone and rearrange them in any order. Sounds like that is coming on isub but not yet. I have absolutely no problems streaming 192 downsampled over 3g.
Great job!
