Download & Upload limit & the general state of docum

Hi there I've just started trying out subsonic and I'm impressed so far. However I have a question about the Download & Upload limits in

"Settings > Advanced"

I don't understand if this is "download" from the a client's perspective or server's perspective.

Is this "download limit" the global download limit applied to users streaming (i.e. downloading from the server, so you're actually setting the server's upload limit!) or the global limit applied to users uploading to the server (i.e. uploading to the server, so you're actually setting the servers download limit).

I have the same query about the "upload limit".

Either way this really needs to made clearer. I think it should also be made clear that this a global limit and not a limit applied to say each user.

To this end I think the documentation of subsonic is incredibly sparse and I'd like to help with that. How do I start?

Thanks.

While unfortunately I can't answer your first question as I've never used those settings, it would be great if you could help out with documentation in any way.

As far as where to start, that depends on what kind of documentation you're interested in making, i.e. install guides, videos, troubleshooting instructions, etc. I would say you're best bet is to start with something that you had trouble with and writing/videoing/whatever information about that.

I would love to help organize a project to overhaul Subsonic's documentation and am happy to contribute in any way I can. There are good instructions for basic installation, but as soon as someone has a problem past that there isn't much to turn to besides the forums.

I'm planning on releasing a series of instructional videos on installing Subsonic and iSub, using different features, port forwarding, etc, but I've been so caught up getting the next version of iSub out that I've had to put it on the back burner for now.

Let me know what you're interested in working on and I'll help in any way I can. I think if we could work together with other experienced users to map out a table of contents for a user guide and then work on the different sections, we could get a really complete set of documentation done after a bit of work. The first step I think is to figure out that table of contents and then maybe setup a Wiki so that everyone can contribute by filling in the different sections with full walk throughs, pictures detailing the steps, etc.

What do you think?

wiki sections...

I think a wiki is a very good idea that way everybody can contribute.

I'm going to be writing a small guide to using subsonic standalone on my blog fairly soon but a wiki would be so much better.

I think we need to put together a list of items that documenting

Here is my suggestion for a basic structure:

* Beginners guide to subsonic
(this would basically link to articles about setting up, but to only what is necessary, i.e. don't bombard first-time user with too much info. Maybe a few bits of wisdom on the page too...?)

*Installation and start/stop server
- standalone
- Debian/Ubuntu
-Redhat/fedora
-Windows
- Mac OSX
- WAR install

*Playback methods
-Web player
-External player
-External player with jukebox
-Jukebox

* Settings
- Music Folders
- General
- Advanced
- Personal
- Users
- Players
- Network
- Transcoding
- InternetTV/ radio
- Podcast
- search
- cover art

* Podcasts

* Android client
- setup
- basic use
- limitations

* iPhone client
- setup
- basic use
- limitations

*FAQ

*Developer
- API
- Theme design
- "Hacking the code"

Sorry I couldn't get back to this sooner. I've been caught up finishing a contract project for a client.

I think that list is a GREAT start toward a Wiki layout. I'll email Sindre about getting a Wiki setup.

Hi all and sorry for the late reply.

Yes, I think a wiki is an excellent idea, and if someone is willing to contribute to documenting Subsonic I would be ever so grateful! I'll be the first to admit that the existing user documentation is not very comprehensive.

Technically, I think the best solution would be to use the Wiki service provided by SourceForge (which also hosts the Subsonic source code). I will look into it and see how to set it up. More later.

Thanks,
Sindre

So the link to Subsonic's wiki on SourceForge is http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/s ... /index.php

I'm not sure what it takes to get edit rights, but you probably need to register as a SourceForge user and then apply to be member of the Subsonic project.

Maybe someone could try that?

As far as I understand, the SourceForge wiki works as follows:

1. Register as a SourceForge user.
2. Log on to SourceForge
3. Visit the Subsonic wiki. Your user is then automatically added to the wiki system (but without edit rights).
4. Email or PM me your SourceForge username so that I can grant you edit rights.

I already granted edit rights to Delcypher, Michaeljgrant and Oeh.

would it not be easier to put a forum here with the instructions on it? I would help with what I can. I have a Mac with snow leopard and was able to install very easily, I can write something up on that. I do think there needs to be a way to have it install more in the background rather than having a window up all the time (unless it is and I am missing it). I don't have isub so I can't help with that one sorry.
