Windows 7, uPnP streaming, server not visible

Postby philw » Wed Dec 01, 2010 11:20 am

I have a 64-bit Windows 7 machine. I need to stream FLAC from it, but for now I'm trying to get subsonic working with mp3 files only.

My remote device (a HiFi uPnP box) can see the WMP media server on the PC no problem. It can also see and use a Twonky media streamer I installed as a test. It can't see the Subsonic server which I have installed.

Subsonic installed fine and works on localhost. I had to change the ports as I've a few webservers running already. I created myself an account, changed the default pasword etc. It finds and plays my media locally, from the Win 7 PC.

However I can't see the uPnP server on the local LAN. The HiFi box and the PC are connected to the same router and as above, the Box can see the PC media servers, but not the Subsonic one.

But it's unclear to me how this works; I've no way on the box of specifying any authentication (user/pw) details, so I need to set up Subsonic to allow anonymous access from my LAN. Can I do that?

I think I may have missed something obvious here, but I just want to be able to run Subsonic on one machine, and access it on the other, but I don't have a browser on the HiFi Box, so the server has to be uPnP accessible and anonymously accessed.

I disabled my Windows firewall and that's not it. I also had a look at the rules and they look fine. The router is already making the machines visible to each other or I'd not get WMP and Twonky working...

(I want to use Subsonic because WMP won't play FLAC and although Twonky will it looks pretty horrid and seems more video oriented).

Can anyone help with that please?

While an oft-requested feature, Subsonic is not UPnP or DLNA compliant. I know of no way to get what you want from Subsonic with your setup. I think Twonky is your best bet.

Twonky only recently 'became' video-centric, and PacketVideo has been marketing this aspect of it, so I'm not surprised you sense that, but it IS a capable server, and not too difficult to set up. It's well worth the cost if it fits your needs. G'Luck!

Thanks... for the record, Twonky will stream FLAC, but won't play it (!). Well you can't have everything it seems. At the moment that plus Media Monkey or Foobar2000 are the only things which will do this.

WMP will play FLAC if tweaked but won't stream it.
iTunes won't play it, and Allegro Media Server won't stream it from an iTunes library.

Possibly some of the other stuff will work but not a lot looks particularly usable.
