Media Not Playing Over Internet

Postby ntallman » Wed Jan 19, 2011 11:27 pm

I've got another problem. Maybe bushman4 can help me again ;)

I've setup subsonic, forwarded ports on my router, added exceptions to Windows Firewall, and it works great on my LAN. However, when I access subsonic over the internet, off my LAN, I have a problem.

Subsonic loads, all my media is indexed with cover art, everything looks great. But nothing will actually play. The flash player displays the length of the song, but won't actually start to play...

Thanks for the confidence... we'll see...

What do you have between the Subsonic Server and the internet? Are all of the transcoding settings still set to their defaults? Have you tried with just an MP3 or FLV (or mp4) file?

Are you willing to set up a test username and password so we can see if the problem is universal?

I can try... but I think Mr. Magoo might have a ton more experience with Subsonic than I do... ;-)

Between the server and the internet is my router and cable modem. I've rocked my own web server before and haven't had problems. The transcoding settings are all set to default and both audio and video work, locally.

PM me your email and I'll add you as a user. Maybe it's just my workplaces network.

Thanks!

I am having this exact same problem, except some of my files play while the majority don't. Were you ever able to get this working?

It all works. It's just a combination of getting the setup right and tailoring SS to the capability of your hardware. See Stozher's posts for transcoding advice. He really understands it. I just follow his advice on transcoding.

Transcoding kills the cpu on even stout hardware. I get excellent results by converting my SS libraries to formats that will play in JW Player without transcoding. Music's not a big deal, but video will max a cpu in a hurry. I use mp4 or flv for most video, as both will play in SS without transcoding. I can have a dozen or more videos streamig at the same time if transcoding is bypassed, but one high res video being transcoded will kill my server, which is a 3 GHz Xeon quad core with 8GB ram. ffmpeg only uses one core per stream, so even when task mgr. says you're only using 25% cpu, that's really one core maxed at 100%.

Try the Kung Fu video in the videos folder at

http://maplegrove.subsonic.org

to see how it works for you. It's a 942 kbps flv. As always connection speed is a factor.
