Is it possible to download a set of selected songs in the android app. I want to download several while I'm on my home wifi, so that they are not downloaded on 3g when I am out and listening.

I can get a zip file through the browser, is there a convenient way to integrate that zip into the subsonic folder on the device?

I find it very easy to just create a playlist I like, then set your cache size large enough to download the list and set the songs to preload to unlimited. Load the playlist, Select all, Queue, and let it cache. I do this when I know I might be on the road where I don't get a good 3g signal. Works great.
