Transcoding wma...huge file!

I am having a problem that I'm sure is elementary to many of you. Many of my files are wma variable bit rate and the stock transcoding produces a huge mp3 file...like 3-4 times the original size of the file. I've been using subsonic for a while and when i had it installed on a different computer i never had that problem.
Does anyone have a suggestion?
