Transcode MP3 to MP3, ONLY when bitrate > client maximum

I have everything set up and working great with Subsonic and my Android phone.

Now I am wanting to transcode my MP3s to lower quality MP3s to be sent to my phone. Here are the details.
  • My music collection has a wide variety of bitrates, ranging from 64kbps to 320kbps
  • I don't need anything higher than 160kbps on my phone, so I set the "Max Bitrate" to 160kbps on phone
  • When I try to play an MP3 file with a bitrate lower than 160kbps, I want Subsonic to just send the original file
  • When I try to play an MP3 file with a bitrate higher than 160kbps, I want Subsonic to transcode it to 160kbps
I looked around for answers to this question, but couldn't find anything about this specific problem. Can anyone tell me how to do this?

My Settings:

The downsample command:
lame -S -h --resample 44.1 -b %b --tt %t --ta %a --tl %l %s -

Just set the max bitrate for the player that the android app uses in settings/players to 160 and the jobs done.
DO NOT CHANGE the transcoding options from default unless you know what you are doing

BKKKPewsey: I'm comfortable changing codec options if that's what I have to do, but are you telling me that Subsonic already does the functionality that I'm wanting? I.e.

  • If the file is 64kbps, it will NOT transcode and upsample to 160kbps (it will just transfer the original file)
  • If the file is 160kbps, it will NOT transcode it to a new 160kbps stream (it will just transfer the original file)
  • If the file is 320kbps, it WILL transcode it and downsample to 160kbps

That is correct :)
Also don't forget bitrate is set in 2 places, player and settings/advanced for overall download/upload bitrate
