ffmpeg hardware encode

Postby djuniah » Wed Oct 05, 2011 6:56 pm

Hello,

I've got Subsonic installed on an Ubuntu based mediacenter that i built and so far, everything has been amazing! The only "limitation" that i have at the moment is the inability to stream HD videos. I know why this is happening, and i think i know how i could fix it, but i need a little help.

The mobo that i'm running has an embedded intel Atom chip, and an NVIDIA onboard GPU. While running XBMC, i just enable hardware decoding and it handles the playback of the HD files just fine. Also, i'm fairly sure that ffmpeg supports vdpau decoding as well. I also saw that subsonic's setting allows you to configure what commands it uses for different formats (which is amazing).

So i guess my questions is: What do i need to add to these sections to allow for hardware encoding (if that's even possible)?

Thanks!

I just built my new server and installed Subsonic 4.6 beta1 and I still have some questions with HD videos. However if ffmpeg could use the GPU to help encode that would be awesome.

My Setup:
MB: Asus P8B-WS
CPU: Xeon E3-1235 3.2ghz
MEM: 16GB Kignston DDR3
OS: Win7 Ultimate - Raid1 on 2 500GB WD 7200rpm
RocketRaid 2680 - MiniSAS 8087 to 4 2TB Seagate 5900rpm drives (non-raid)

Anyways I notice while watching videos over the internet my server cannot seem to transcode videos fast enough. I set the video player to 1000kps, my connection on my server is 20d/2up so it should only use half my upload. I do notice at times that my processor spikes all 8 cores @ 100%. The ffmpeg*32 service is the one using the processing power.

Just wondering if this is normal for ffmpeg should max out all 8 cores at times? Also I have to pause my show for about 2 minutes before I can watch it.
