Is there any way to make subsonic read the rating information from the file tag? I have rated most of my music with MediaMonkey and now subsonic does not see them. It would be awesome if this was an option.

IMHO, ratings shouldn't be kept in tags. If you use tags, there's no good way to support multiple users, who would each want to have their own ratings.

That is a pretty one dimensional view. I believe we should have the OPTION to use the subsonic DB or tag. I personally do not let others rate the songs in MY music. Due to this limitation I don't use rating at all in Subsonic which actually makes it a pain in the butt. Now when I am at home and listen to MediaMonkey (which puts ratings in the tag) it does not show in subsonic. Also, when I rate my music in my media player (which also used tags for ratings) I cannot see that in subsonic. As well when I rate the songs in Subsonic I do not see that anywhere except in subsonic itself. And if I lose my DB I have as well lost my ratings. Personally I would like to have to option and I can agree not EVERYONE will want this but I do know there are a few forum topics requesting this.

The best I have is to create smart playlists in MediaMonkey and then export them so that Subsonic can read them. This way you can at least listen to your music by rating.

did a solution for this ever come about? After having to re-install subsonic and loose all my ratings it now seems silly to store it in some proprietary form when the rest of the world already successfully uses ID3 tags which live with the file. At least for me, the issue of different users having different ratings is moot. if another user wants to select favorites they can still star or make playlists.
i think an ideal compromise would be for subsonic to read the id3 tag if no rating has been assigned in subsonic by the user. the id3 tag would be a starting point and if users want to change their personal ratings it would allow for that. Or just give us the ability to choose if we want to read and write ratings to and from the id3 tag or use subsonic's own system.

Bump! This seems overdue now. Any takers?
