lag access music from a nas..

Postby crazylegs » Wed Apr 25, 2012 1:22 am

Hello guys... I have a quick question..

I have subsonic loaded a on Notebook core 2 duo, 4gig ram, windows XP SP3. My music is stored on a home NAS(NAS4Free) server. ZFS mirror raid on a 1Gb home network.
My notebook gets 50/55MBs read and writes to my NAS, so speed shouldn't be too much of an issue. For some odd reason. Im getting lag when browsing and playing my music while on a lan.
Its gets worse when accessing my server with my phone over 3G speeds. This was never the case when my music collection stored locally on the hard drive. I have 200Gb of music.

I've noticed the same thing on my network. My central media library is on a RAID 50 array that has outrageous capability upwards of 500Mbps and can saturate my gigabit lan, I have several servers with multiple instances of SS installed and I do notice that locally accessing media consistently and noticably is much faster than accessing a network share.

All my gear is Windows based so there is no issue with accessing Linux stuff which I think does take a performance hit due to format differences.

GJ51... Thank you for your reply. Glad to know i'm not the only one having this problem as i did spend a lot of money on this setup. This isn't too much of a big deal for me on a lan, but on 3G speeds while streaming through my phone with multiple users on, it can become a deal breaker..

I dual booted using ubuntu on my notebook to test and see if the problem is still present, but im having another issue as i have no clue how to mount my media to SS using Ubuntu. I kept getting a message stating "no media found".. am i doing it right..? smb:\\nas4free\foldername\music\

I can browse and even mount the drive in ubuntu, but for the life of me i can't get SS to see my music.. is that the correct path structure for linux?

Sorry, I'm a pure Windows guy. I do know that if you want to access a network share from Subsonic you have to give the Subsonic service logon rights to the share. The instructions are in the Tutorial section. If your NAS is visible to the host computer where SS is installed you just have to edit the service logon to use an account that has access rights to the share.

When you define the path to the folder in Subsonic use the\\sharename format. It will not work as a mapped drive for some reason.

:) even on a Sonos or Squeezebox system, I am assuming you're forced to use their remote hardware or PC interface software to browse your music. I am a big fan of accessing my music straight from Windows Explorer. Is there a system or setup capable of "pushing" music stored on a NAS to my receiver speakers when using Windows Explorer on my laptop rather than using the provided GUI?

I'm a little confused as to what you are trying to accomplish as subsonic does just that. My Subsonic setup consists of my notebook as the subsonic server. My Notebook is plugged in directly to my hometheater AV receiver via a optical cable. Anyone at at time can walk up to it or remote to it and select their music of choice to hear around the house. My music is streamed from a NAS. I have speakers ran through out my house and programed them by individual zones. I can select what room to hear my music on.

I didn't repy to this earlier because i wan't sure what was being asked either. It sounds like he wants to use his laptop to browse the music folders on his NAS in Windows explorer and have the music play on his reciever speakers.

I'm not sure this is even a Subsonic question.

Any music has to be played through a player frontend of some sort, even if it's Windows Media Player, whcih should be able to see his NAS library.

So, my guess is he's just asking how to get music played on his laptop to use his reciever speakers as the output. The easy answer is to just hook up the output from the laptop to an AUX in port on the reciever. You can also use bluetooth on some recievers or buy an adapter to use BT on older systems.

Can't imagine what else we could be talking about on this one.

I originally had all of my music on my NAS but as you did, I experienced bad lag. Half of the time it would refuse to connect when using my phone. I have now moved all of my music to a hard drive inside my HTPC and it runs brilliantly. I have also setup allwaysync to copy any changes I make to my music collection to my NAS as a back up.

Hard drive prices are getting back to reasonable levels again. The easiest answer is to add an internal hard drive to the host PC.

The best answer is to put Subsonic on a RAID array - that ain't cheap - but it is smokin hot!!! - not to mention FAST.
