Hi all:

I use subsonic mostly to hear music with my android phone.

After a few days using it I have just noticed that musics that I have been listening are stored on my mobile !!!

Why is this ??

What am I doing wrong ??

Nothing, this is by design. Subsonic caches your most recently played music locally for playback.

You can control how large and where the cache is in the settings menu, assuming you are using an Android phone.

Yes using an Android.

So this will be dangerous when listening to music outside of my own wifi.(I am talking about limited internet services ).

There's no way to disable that function and have it only streaming music withou downloading ??
What happens when cache limit is reached ??

Why would music being cached on your phone be dangerous if you are not on Wi-Fi? The music is already there...

You can set the application to only stream when wifi is available if you want, I believe.

Not sure where the Danger is though...

As to what happens when the limit is reached, the oldest song is removed and the newest one takes its place.

some services are limited by ISP providers which is not the case when using my WIFI.I subscrive a service for my mobile that has a limit of 300 MB/month of download.

I have also my IPAD with a subsonic player.Does it have same behaviour ???

Thanks for your assistance.

But that has nothing to do with caching the files... I think you misunderstand how music streaming works.

The subsonic server creates a music stream to play on your phone. How that stream is transmitted to your phone is up to you... either over wi-fi or 3g. But no matter which you choose, your phone is receiving data. All streaming applications (Pandora, iheartradio, etc...) have this behavior.

Subsonic has the added benefit of also caching that stream as music files on your phone for times when you are out of service, or do not want to eat into your 3g data limit... you can play back those cached songs with no data effect.

But no matter what streaming application you use, the act of streaming the data to your phone requires data transmission.

So, your best bet is to set the android Subsonic app to only stream when using WiFi and it will not affect your data plan at all.

Yes you are right.
With or without dowload the data trasnission occurs.
I got a bit confused.
I can only listen music throug subsonic on the range of my wifi (as I have no limits of download ) or at some free wifis.

The use of 3G for streaming music is not yet an option.

What about the ipad (I use Z-subsonic) does it work the same way ??

Are streamed musics also stored somewhere in my ipad ??

You would have to ask in the forums for whatever iPad app you use... because Sindre wrote the android application, this is the forum to discuss both the Subsonic Server application and the Android application. But the other mobile platform applications have their own support sites.
