best *cheap* device for client

Postby mr_nobody » Thu May 31, 2012 8:24 pm

Hello. I've been using the subsonic android app on my kobo vox (a cheap/underpowered android tablet/ereader). Performance is not great so I am looking at alternatives. Cheap is good. Small is also good. Available in canada is a bonus.

I only use SS for music and I only need wifi, not wired or 3g access.

An obvious candidate would be the ipod touch ($200 here in canada). I'm just wondering if there is something better or cheaper I might want to look at. Thanks.

200 bux would get you a kindle fire, but not sure what apps are available outside the US. I bought a kindle fire a month ago and the first app I installed was the subsonic app. The MAIN reason I bought the fire, was because of the subsonic app. It streams flawlessly through the kindle and it is lightweight, looks great and does all the things I want it to.

Hope that helps. :)

Thanks. Kindle fire is not available yet in canada. Form factor is the same as kobo vox (7" android tablet) but obviously the fire is less underpowered than the vox.

Think I'm gonna try an archos 28. It's a cheap ($90 here) android (2.2) device. I bet it will not be up to the job and I'll return it but it's worth a shot.

If you want a really cheap device, take a look at Deal Extreme's offerings:

What would be a cheap device for a client to watch subsonic on their TV's?

Would a Roku work?

Yea, that probably would be the cheapest option. Just have to wait until more RaspberryPi's are available to buy.

Have you tried XBMC running on a RaspberryPi?

Has anyone tried a Roku or any other device with good success?

Just wanted to update this thread, I got my archos 28 yesterday and surprisingly it seems to work great for music streaming from subsonic. It is tiny and I got it on final clearance for $50 so really can't complain.

The Roku has three channels. One is free, one is pay, and the other is a free Lite version of one of the pay app. I'm not particularly happy with their setup. If you have a large collection, picking songs and creating playlists can be difficult. It works but personally, I think the UI is rather terrible. The lack of any sort of cursor may make that an inherent problem for the Roku.

The cheapest computers that I know of cost $250 unless you go used and you could obviously use the web app. The cheapest tablets that I know of run Android and cost $150-$175. The Kindle Fire app works well. iSub for iOS devices costs $5 and works well. Roku is your cheapest option but I think an Android tablet would be the cheapest option I'd take.

Woot has several tablets on sale today that would run Subsonic. They range between $50 and $70.

Yea, I would rather have something playback on a larger screen.

I will definitely be buying a RaspberryPi when they are available again.

Thanks!
