Download Lossless (how to transcode)

Postby grotius » Wed Sep 26, 2012 7:34 am

Hi there,

I am using subsonic for some weeks now but i do have a question. Most of my music files are lossless. Is there an option to download (cache) albums transcoded (i.e. 320kb) instead of the original format (lossless). The capacity of my iphone is limited :D and there are times when i do not have acces to 3g or wifi

Thanks!

SS will always transcode non mp3 audio files to mp3's at the bitrate that you specify.
Note I believe the audio properties shown may show the original info which may make you think that they are not being converted, but as I do not possess an iPhone I cannot confirm.

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

If you click on play, subsonic will transcode the file however you've configured it for the player you've chosen.

If you click on the download icon, then it will download the original file to you, so you'll get the lossless version.

If you want to cache the transcoded versions in your android subsonic player you will basically need to queue up and play them once, after which the trancodes will be cached on your device.

If I have 15 Mbps bandwidth, is there a way to transmit lossless FLAC files from my PC to my iPhone (which is then docked to my audio system with a DAC) without transcoding down to MP3 format and losing audio quality in the process? If 15 Mbps is not sufficient, what bandwidth, if any, would be adequate?

Probably the best you can do is to use ogg at -q 10 setting. The bottleneck is usually the connection speed of the phone which will vary quite a bit by carrier and coverage area where you're currently connected. Ogg is very efficient and you can adjust the q setting to get the best balance between performance and quality.
