that's pretty lame it isn't sent to you automatically like every other website that auto-emails you a link/code whatever once paypal's api confirms legitimate payment. i'm experiencing the same problem..

p.s..you can call it a donation all you want, but seeing as how you can't have something until you pay, it's hardly being given as charity :) being able to listen to my music is being held as ransom until i pay up.. i would be more inclined to donate willingly if i didn't have this hang over my head :-P

Cynikal:
Nothing is keeping you from listening to your music, or using Subsonic. It works wonderfully without donating money, and is therefore in no way holding you or your "listening" hostage.

Donating money to help Sindre offset the costs associated with developing this incredible product simply unlocks some premium features, like accessing it with mobile devices... You have no reason to feel like you are being deceived or cheated.

P.S. Have you ever heard of the saying that you can catch more flies with honey?

I think his qualm is with calling it a Donation - "something which is given to a charity or out of charity" - when it is really a purchase.

You can take a computer from a store, but if you make a $1000 "Donation" then you'll get the premium feature of not being arrested.

I have no problems paying for the feature at all, I'm glad to - it's a nice feature. I also have no problem donating money for free software that I use and like. But I don't quite like that it's being called a donation instead of purchasing a premium feature - especially since when I donate I get a "license key" which is clearly implying that I purchased a license.

A donation is voluntary, and you get a license and premium features for your donation, which is an inducement or incentive to donate. A purchase would be compulsory, and is usually a fixed amount.

modern android phones can download adobe air free from the market. Install SUBAIR http://www.subsonic.org/pages/apps.jsp and you could probably get it working for free. (haven't personally tried this, maybe not...)

Plus, it's open source, so you could do some coding, set up your own web server, and have it free... just peachy. :)

that being said, sorry about your licence code. Worked fine for me. (also... shouldn't this be in the help forum?)

The key was supposed to be emailed to you. Check your spam inbox, and if NOT there, contact Sindre via email, sindre@activeobjects.no . :)

Not a donation

Donation: Donations are gifts given without return consideration.
Gift: something voluntarily transferred by one person to another without compensation

If compensation is offered (i.e. Use of streaming to phone) it is not a donation, it is a sale, or lease.

I love supporting projects that are worthwhile. But I oppose calling a term a donation when there is compensation for said "donation". I also do not mind purchasing licenses for Open Source Projects if it is marketed as such, and worth the investment.

I don't care what you call it. SS is one of the best bargains available. If you just want to get hung up in sematics rather than just enjoying one of the best bargains available, then just move on. Most of the regular posters here have made multiple VOLUNTARY donations to the author out of appreciation for the functionality he has given our systems. I have never before seen a dev that responds to his community as well as Sindre. He actively reviews users concerns and inputs, and trys to get to the issues we raise. http://subsonic.svn.sourceforge.net/vie ... n/TODO.TXT If anyone thinks that this kind of interactive support and development isn't worth what the author is suggesting, then they just don't have an appreciation for what it takes to produce a program of this nature.

Too bad you don't like the semantics of the compensation structure. At least enjoy the product.

my two cents

I'll have to bump this topic!
This simply is not about semantics as GJ51 said. This is about claiming that this software is donationware, when it actually isn't.
Donationware is a totally different concept from the Freemium Business Model many wepapps use nowadays!
I have no problem whatsover in paying for services that I like - and I do so quite often.
And I do happily support free software by donating some amount here and there.
This is the first software I have come across though, that claims to be donation-ware but cripples its features (API calls), if I do not donate!
On the donation-site it also says that "... [I] can select any amount [I] like:..", but then only gives me the option to pay a minimum amount of 10€.
I would have paid even 20€, if he wouldn't sell premium features under false pretenses. This simply is trialware, and it does not make a difference how great the support or the piece of software is.

Anyways, I think Sindre should either stop claiming his software is donationware, or sell it as Trialware and explicitly state so.
Otherwise people simply get lured into installing the software, and setting everything up, until they notice that it does not work as advertised after the trial runs out. Not cool and a great way of pissing off people who would otherwise be willing to pay/support the project!
I will look elsewhere and refuse to pay any amount until this is fixed. And you should so too!
Just my two cents...

[Edit] I have pm'ed Sindre, because I really would like to hear what he has to say to this.
