There is yet another reason why this app is dead in the water. If you go here https://github.com/einsteinx2/iSub, Ben states that all code is now licensed under GPL3. That's basically a legal statement saying "I don't own the app anymore". Apple doesn't allow GPL3 apps in the app store. It's why VLC was pulled from there some years ago & had to be rebuilt.

This sounds bad. Is that the end of the line? Can someone claim the code and make it closed-source or ...?

That's pretty unethical & leads to lawsuits.

Well, as it stands now, the code is useless. Who would be in a position to sue?

Ben Baron to some extent, Apple to the full extent. The code isn't useless, many of us have managed to get it to build & I've issued it to more than 20 people.

In other words, this is the end of the line for iSub unless you have a developer account. Is that correct?

You could say that. I am pretty sure you'll always find developers willing to issue the app out to you though.

So do I need a developer account or not?

If you want to do it yourself then yes. Otherwise no, I can provide a build for you with just your UDID.

Ok, I just downloaded a new version of the clone to my desktop, opened it with xCode 5.1.1, switched from HockeyLib to iSub Release, built and pressed the run button. Everything worked and its running fine on my iPad 8.0.2!!!!

However, it definitely looks like this is just a temporary fix as, if your statement is correct, unless it were totally re-written none of the current code will ever be allowed to be uploaded to the Apple Store for anyone to distribute.

It's interesting how Apple has been "involved" in the loss of my two favorite apps that I have found over the years to stream my music to an iOS device. I can't remember the name of the first one I used 4 or 5 years ago, but it only required a helper app to be installed on your Mac or PC and the app would read the iTunes library and save a copy of the library on their server. When you fired up the iOS app, it would connect to their server and show you a perfect image of your iTunes library, playlists, etc... When you chose a song or a list, random play, etc, it would then send a command to the app running on your Mac or PC and it would stream the music to your iOS device. For me, it worked perfectly! Then, about a year after I had bought the app (I wish I could remember the name, but it doesn't matter) the company sent out an email to all users saying that they had been bought by Apple to work with their upcoming cloud tunes project and that their servers would be coming down in a few months.

It took me a number of months, but I then found Subsonic and iSub and I have been "fat and happy" with that. Then the iSub programmer took a job with Apple and, of course, no company can allow one of their employees to run his own business on the side working on a project that is in the same line of work as theirs. I don't blame him for taking the job, I'd have done the same.....

So, here we are.... Assuming that a new actor would step up to the stage and develop a totally newly coded app that had the same features of iSub (I'm guessing this isn't a trivial task), we still have a material solution where the server portion of the solution is maintained by one individual and the end-user portion would be maintained by another. Not an impossible relationship, but something that could be problematic. For example, the server programmer could change the Subsonic APIs and then iSub Mark II would be broken again, or something could happen in the server programmer's life that could end his ability to support Subsonic and it might not survive the next OS upgrade on the Mac or a PC, etc, etc, etc...

I really liked the first app I used as it mirrored the iTunes library so it didn't use file structure to index the music, it used a true database that was in the iTunes library. But I lament....

I purchased Plex back when you could buy a lifetime license before they changed to a yearly subscription. It's an OK program and it does offer a number of features that iSub lacks, especially with movies on your Mac/PC and other online videos, but the interface is awkward, and I just can't get excited about it. It does cache, so I could use it on a train or plane. I didn't look at the system graphs, but I suspect it uses more system resources than Subsonic as well.

I haven't programmed anything in many years, but I'd like to see a new product developed that simply ran a helper app on a Mac/PC that utilized the iTunes library and a client for iOS that took care of caching/syncing the library on the device locally, sent calls to the helper app on the Mac/PC, and allowed for the caching of songs on the device. Of course, this is based on my requirements, I understand that other people want all the video stuff, etc, so this might not be their perfect solution.

Sadly, I doubt if we will see this anytime soon, as the other solutions I've tried are marginal at best and if correct, we will never see iSub back on the Apple Store.

Comments???

To be honest I am trying to get a job as a programmer so I would like to do my own project since I don't have a CS degree. It has to be something I care about & iSub allows me to stream my extremely large video game/movie music collection so I'll probably take a stab at doing my own thing. I don't really know what kind of success I'll have but we'll see.
