hey mustang, glad you like it!

I never use the Show Desktop button so I wouldn't have ever noticed that so thanks. I will look into it and see what I can do to prevent it from happening.

Hey kramttocs, did you fix this in the latest release? If not, then this is weird. It only does it on my Dell work laptop (which has aquadock installed as well). I just installed it on my HTPC and my desktop at home over the weekend and I don't notice the Show Desktop issue. All have 7 Ultimate installed.

Man this thing is cool. Gotta love open source...

Another update on the status of 2.4.

Besides the features listed in the earlier post there have been a few improvements to the way the gadget works. These are some much needed changes and make the gadget much more usable.
I have sent the release to the testers so once I hear from them it will be released on don's site.

Any plans to make one for Mac OS? Would be nice to see a menu bar icon which allows you to search for artists and such.

CoverSutra does it for iTunes. Check it out at CoverSutra.com. If it has all the features that has but able to access subsonic it would be awesome.

Sorry, I don't have access to a Mac and have never tried developing for it. But that CoverSutra does look pretty slick and would be very nice if tied to Subsonic.

SubGadget 2.4 Release

Postby kramttocs » Wed Apr 06, 2011 10:46 pm

Update 2.4 -- 4/6/2011

This update introduces a lot of new features that make the gadget much more usable/enjoyable.

I have been unable to reach Don to get it put up on his site so for now I have thrown it up on Google Code.

http://code.google.com/p/subgadget/

Added Features
Direct button (from within the search dropdown) to the Artist Directory
    New Name = SubGadget
Ability to Backup and Restore settings (u/n and p/w encrypted)
Settings are now stored in the My Documents folder(u/n and p/w encrypted) - This removes a lot of the limitations of the built-in sidebar settings manager and means that settings no longer have to be touched when updating
Ability to save multiple servers in settings
Show Album when hovering over the Artist in Track section of Search Results
Top portion/header of the flyout remains fixed allow contstant access to the Add button and Artist Directory - Don's skin has not been updated yet to reflect this change in the Artist Directory flyout
    Improved Settings - Tabbed
Cursor is placed in text box when showing search making fewer mouse movements required. Click (search button) > Type > Hit Enter
Trashcan only closes the flyout when viewing the Current Playlist (since it no longer exists)
For the Current Playlist, Playlist Select, Search, and Artist Directory flyouts, the flyout no longer automatically closes allowing multiple Artists/Albums/Tracks from different directories to be added to the playlist
A lot of code consolidation and optimization

Bug Fixes
When in Shuffle mode and the playlist has gone through them all, the status would stay on 'Media Changing...' rather than going to the playlist's name
A silent error (didn't affect performance or functionality) was being thrown when selecting checkboxes on Artists that weren't expanded in the Artist Directory

Although 2.4 was just released to the public, just wanted to mention a feature that is going to be in 2.5

Playlist Editing and Saving
Completed
    Ability to rename playlist
Ability to remove tracks from playlist
Ability to reorder tracks in playlist
Ability to save playlist to server (if permission allows)

In progress
Ability to save playlists locally regardless of server permissions

memory leak?

Postby DavidJGates » Thu Apr 07, 2011 3:45 pm

kramttocs, thanks for the app. I really like it. However, it been a problem child for me. A couple of times I've gotten a runaway memory/processor condition. Right now task manager shows sidebar taking over 1GB of memory and continually using around 50% of the CPU.

The reason I'm blaming your app is because it is the only widget I've added in over a year and I didn't have this problem earlier.

I haven't tried 2.4 yet, but I didn't notice any changes related to this. Maybe I'll get lucky.

Just thought you should know. Thanks!

Running most recent version on a windows 7 box streaming from a WHS on the LAN. Sidebar gadget is using 23,000k memory and maybe 1-2% processor with 200+ in the playlist.

Hey Dave,
Thanks for bringing this up.
Like whimpyjones has mentioned, I have never seen SubGadget (sidebar.exe) take more than 23mb ram and 2% cpu on all of the machines I have ran it on. The gadget itself is really incapable of consuming that much memory.
With that being said, sidebar.exe is completely capable of doing this (and does). On 7 (I don't know about Vista), there is a known leak that in some cases will cause the process' used ram to slowly grow if it isn't restarted. It also appears that IE9rc makes this much much worse. I don't know about the final release. What version of IE do you have installed?

Edit: Also, what if you remove SubGadget and add some other gadget(s) to the sidebar? Do you see the same behavior?

Thanks for the quick reply. I do have a couple other widgets on the desktop. However, they have been there for at least a year without any issues. I really don't use IE (firefox man), so that's still on version 8. Sounds like your app may just be exposing the bad behavior by sidebar. Is there any hope for a remedy to the sidebar issue?
