No more transcoding

Hi

hope someone knows a solution for this.

What I under stand with Subsonic is that it transcodar the files to flv?

it is like this all my movies (streaming only movie with subsonic) is in the format H264 AAC in MP4 container.
would not it be better if it stays in that format and only lowers kbps instead?

the only question is how do I change it? Is there possibly some kind soul here who can explain?

I don't think you can lower the kbps without transcoding. The nice thing about mp4 video is that it will play direct to the KW Player without transcoding, so that there is very little CPU load on the server and the only limiting factor is the connection speed.

If bandwidth is of concern, then you will have to transcode and specify lower kbps in the settings. Then you may find it a problem if you don't have enough CPU to keep up with the data stream.

To lower the bit rate of a video file you need to transcode it, unfortunately. There are video file formats which support 'bitrate peeling' (but the player does not support these.

I made a very simple (and simpleminded) script that caches the transcoded video files. It has many flaws but it does make it possible to at least re-watch a previously watched video without needing to transcode it again. This is especially beneficial for those of us who use servers with limited cpu capacity. If anyone is interested I can polish it a bit and put it up for download. The script runs on my Linux server without problems, but as said it *is* rather simple-minded.
