Subsonic vs. Jinzora

How does Subsonic differ from Jinzora, and is one better than the other? I installed Subsonic a few days ago with no problems and I am using it across the Internet successfuly. I was going to install Jinzora when I stumbled onto Subsonic which I like, but curiosity is about to force me to try Jinzora. For that of course, I have to install MySQL, Apache and PHP. Thanks.

Hey thanks for posting that, never heard of Jinzora. I looked it over a bit and it really looks nice. After checking it out a bit I have decided I like Subsonic better since it streams to my player of choice instead of using a web browser popup with a flash player. I also like Subsonic's interface better. I do like that Jinzora has the ability to be imbedded in a page, though that isn't a feature I would use. I also like that Jinzora has more styles, giving people flexibility. I wish Subsonic had more visual styles and color schemes, I would offer to make some but I have zero creative ability :/ I like that Subsonic is so easily deployed on Tomcat. It is almost brain dead easy.

I just found another similar program called Ampache. I think both Jinzora and Ampache use php while Subsonic uses Java. The advantage of php is that it's easier to find a web host that allows php.

I prefer the real time updates based that subsonic offers over the SQL method that Jinzora uses to find newly added content.

That said, the larger your collection, the longer Subsonic takes to index and load when simply switching from one folder to the other.

I have over 350GB of music and video; the load time is rather long when a user is accessing the site for the first time.

I actually tried Jinzora as well..
it lasted about a day and a half


Jinzora looks good...but the load
times are tremendous and chew
up CPU big time..
Not to mention the support is
practically non-existent on it's
web site.

I think Sindre has it right...
just about as close to perfect
as it can be..

Page load times are good with Subsonic..
even with huge album libraries..

CPU use is nominal...an occasional
spike here and there... but easy to
live with..

Real time updating with Subsonic
rocks.. no worries about moving
folders...or adding new content.

Easy to configure and modify to
suit it's mission
(my installation is a good example
of a fairly high level of customization..
ie: a new help page, removal of elements
that display user IP's...a "Guest" Login)

Over all...Subsonic has the rest of
them easily beat..
(other systems like it I mean)
in my opinion..

I've done some optimizations in the upcoming 3.1 version which enables browser-side caching of the left-hand side frame (the one listing all artists). This will hopefully reduce the time it takes to switch between folders.

Hard to say. Right now I'm on a one-month honeymoon in Australia (hopefully my wife doesn't read this forum...).

I want Ampache's features with Subsonics look-and-feel. I've been using Ampache for a year, I decided to try Subsonic because Ampache just feels... old. Especially in a web 2.0 world.

Subsonic works so good and I support it with $$$. I really like using subsonic's WAP on my smart phone. I don't need to buy an ipod and all my music is in one place. Since my music collection expanded greatly (recently) the screen after logging in takes quite some time to display. This causes the browser on my smart phone to time out and there is nothing I can do about it (maybe make a second subsonic with fewer music folders).

I hope the directory caching fixes this because I so miss being able to queue up any song anywhere.
