Streaming FLAC -> MP3 over HSDPA with Android App

Postby user68 » Mon Nov 01, 2010 12:14 pm

I used Subsonic for the first time today to listen to FLAC files on my Windows Home Server using the Android app. I had a good HSDPA signal on the Android phone but found the music stopped around every minute then resumed after 10 seconds or so.

Are there any settings I can change to improve the playback, and why is it that the music file downloaded to my Android sdcard/subsonic/music folder is larger than the original flac file stored on my server?

This is the 'stutter/notification/rebuffer' issue related to Android...I had this issue, but was resolved for me when Froyo showed up on Nexus One. Sadly, the issue has returned, but I don't know the combination of events that caused it to recur..I now run the latest SS, and Cyanogen Mod 6 Stable, and the issue has returned. The workaround is to simply let the entire first song download to the phone, THEN hit play.

Thanks Alphawave7, I wasn't aware of this issue with Android. But I still wonder why the files downloaded to the device are bigger than the flac files on my server?

I thought that if Subsonic on my server is transcoding flac to mp3, then the files downloaded mp3 files would be significantly smaller, not bigger than the original flac file.

SOLVED: Don't know how, but now my Android device is downloading mp3 files that are around 25% the size of the original flac file, so I guess it's working.

Yippee. I'll be donating to keep this.
