One more thing: If you're having skipping problems with non-mp3 music, make sure to add the "--resample 44.1" option to the LAME transcoding step in Settings > Transcoding

As per usual, many users having problems like to vent on a software that they are having problems with, when the software they are trying to use isn't the problem at all. Ever notice that when someone tries to get specific information, the poster just goes silent?

After ranting there must be something wrong with Subsonic, they never reply when you ask about flashing roms or what they've done with the SD card. Much easier to just bash a perfectly good product, than to admit that they probably just screwed up the phone.

I just wanted to say that the phone that i use is stock. To be honest i have been doing lots to test this issue to see where the problem lies. I have only tried a couple phones so far. 1st one being the Motorola backflip running android 1.5 which skips on both the subsonic test server and also on my server. 2nd My brothers the tilt that used to run win mobile 7 but was flashed with android 2.1. His used to skip but no longer does after Sindre put an update out. "thanks Sindre"

That proved to me that something must be wrong with my phone or with android 1.5. Since then i have tried everything from putting in a faster SD card to connecting directly off the wireless and even messing with the transcoding setting and bitrate but I've had no luck. My plans are to wait for Motorola to put out android 2.1 to see if it fixes my issue. If it doesn't' then it could be hardware related which makes it even tougher to support.

But i would have to say that i agree that it's not necessarily a subsonic problem and that it could be a phone problem. To be honest i think that it's multiple issues and i would love to give the community a answer to why my phone skips hoping that it would fix their issue as well.

It's important to note that folks simply want SS to work as expected. I doubt there's any intent to 'bash' SS over a particular issue inasmuch as to find if the issue is experienced by other users, and to seek commonalities and solutions. This skipping issue is prevalent, across OS versions and phones, so it makes it more difficult to track down/reproduce. That's just the nature of bug-squashing...patience helps! :)

I actually had to hack my phone to get the skipping to stop, not the other way around. I would also make the bold guess that most people having this problem, like me, haven't altered their phone in such a way to cause this.

Although, I do agree that this is probably not solely, if at all, a Subsonic software issue. Having said that, it's still perplexing that of all the other music streamers out there which I use daily (Pandora, LastFM, Grooveshark), none of them skip/stutter.

Well put. SS works in a different way, wrt caching, than those other players, but it's still a valid point. It's also not lost that there ARE issues with some of these: I beta Slacker's Android app, and it's far from perfect, and I occasionally see Pandora stopping/disappearing for no reason. So far Grooveshark is the only app I haven't had serious issues with..yet..but it's still early in my usage. My preference is SS..so I'd love to see it 'bulletproof'...the server is pretty much right there, afaic, so the android app can't be far behind. :)

This problem has become unbearable. I have not experienced this with ANY other program on my phone - Pandora, Grooveshark, etc. As a matter of fact, when I first installed Subsonic and for about the first week, I had zero problems. I just updated the client today and the problem is worse. I have tried all the suggestions on this forum and nothing has worked.

I'm sorry but it's almost to the point that it's unusable. My network connection at home is a 40 megabit pipe from comcast and my computer has more then enough horsepower to handle a simple stream. Upload speeds are around 5 megabit.

I would be willing to give someone, who is not having issues, access to my server to see if it's on the server side.

Thanks.

Are you having any issues from the desktop?

New version update released today. Have you tried latest update.

If you pm me the link and credentials to your site, I'll test it on my phone to determine if it's the site or your phone.

Have you tried wiping and rewriting you SD card? Have you tried restarting? These things can provide temporary solutions

I've got a couple of questions.

Is this happening over wifi or just over your cell connection?

What do you have the max bit rate set to for streaming subsonic on your phone?

Will you go to a mobile speed test site and check your download speed and post it?

I haven't had any problems with my streaming with my phone. You can PM your server address if you want me to try it out.

Try setting your bitrate lower. I set mine to 96kbps just to be safe. Most CDMA 3G networks will have trouble streaming at anything higher than 192kbps. GSM has higher speeds but more latency so I wouldn't try to play higher than 192.

Make sure that you follow Sindre's advice:
One more thing: If you're having skipping problems with non-mp3 music, make sure to add the "--resample 44.1" option to the LAME transcoding step in Settings > Transcoding

If you are transcoding from mp3 to lower bitrate mp3 make sure you put this in the downsample command under Settings>Advanced too.

Code: Select all
lame -S -h --resample 44.1 -b %b %s -

I'm not sure what's causing some of these problems, but I don't think 3g is an issue, unless you have a really bad signal. Most of my tunes stream @ 256k with no problems.

From all I've read, I think this is related more to issues with specific phones, but it's really hard to tell as most who have issues don't reply to offers to test their site, or test their phone on another site.

Anyone who'd like to test on my site would be welcome to do so, just send me a pm.

It might also be helpful if those having problems would specify what phone they have and the software configuration. If we get enough information, a trend may point to the cause.

I haven't had anyone test it, because it doesn't always skip, so I might get a false negative. That and if I restart my phone it starts working, at least for a while. So I am 99% sure it is either a problem with my phone or the subsonic app. Really people this is not a network issue, I promise. The whole phone slows down/freezes when it is happening. Explain how that could be the network.
