Android 2.2, HTC-Desire: Nothing played in "Offline" mode

Hi everybody,

congratulations to this great piece of software: I'm full of admiration and appreciate it very much. Especially since I've see its in SVN as opensource I'm definite a follower.

But, BUG:
One nasty thing: After choosing "Select Server: Offline" everything seems to work fine. I can browse the music on the smartphone. When I press play the play screen comes up - but it won't start playing. There still seem to be a point in program flow where server access is needed.

I hope this can be fixed as its the crucial point to make this app really useful.

wishing all the best

Martin

Different phones seem to have different problems. My EVO 4g plays offline just fine. Did you try a reinstall? Latest version is 1.8.2.

I also bumped the Cache size to 5GB and set songs to preload to unlimited. YMMV

Hope it helps.

Yes,
Good idea to update. I still had 1.8.1 and now its 1.8.3. Now I've turned "update automatically" on. Yes, and I also increased the Cache size from 1 GB to 10GB : - ) Yes, its great to have that 32GB sdcard!

But that didn't fix the problem.

More BUG details:
But I've come to a better perception of what's going wrong. When not connected to a server the - green or yellow - stars in the playlist are missing although the files are present. When I turn WLAN connection on again the stars of the same album are present.

Assumption:
This may indicate that the error happens not at the point where playing should start but somewhere before. My guess is that the playlist is in a Sqlite-DB. And while browsing that list the corresponding files are for some reason not found while offline.

Hhm, ...

1.8.3 is working fine in Offline mode for my wife and I (both Nexus Ones, hers stock Froyo, mine CM6 stable). Perhaps Settings->Manage Applications->Subsonic->Force Stop then Clear cache. I also manually go in to the SD card and delete the music folder to clear it. Restart SS and hook back up to server, d/l a tune to test.

Just tried what you said, no go. Both ways, save on phone and cached only on phone. Think it may be a directory issue, cause both times all subsonic did was create an empty subdirectory with the folder names. For example:

Actual directory listing (via Astro) after saving that album on the phone via subsonic:

subsonic/music/album one/song1.mp3
subsonic/music/album one/song2.mp3
subsonic/music/album one/song3.mp3

Directory listing via subsonic albums:

album one/song1.mp3
album one/song2.mp3
album one/song3.mp3

(with and without clearing the subsonic cache on the app)...
Switch subsonic to offline mode, go to directory listing, click on "album one" folder, click on play all, songs get queued, subsonic is stuck on downloading 0B. Go back to the album listing (still in offline mode), and the following "new" album shows up:

music/album one (empty)

If I check via Astro:

subsonic/music/music/album one (directory is empty)

Are you 'Save to Phone' on these songs? They should show as green/orange stars when saved to phone..these will be available in Offline Mode.

Edit: I just reread your post..I nav'd to subsonic/music using Astro, and all my folders have artist name, and song files are properly named. I would delete subsonic from the phone entirely and start from scratch.

Tried offline mode with both "orange" and "green" songs, same directory issue. This was after I went to the app settings, forced stop the app, cleared cache AND data (had to reenter server data obviously). Also deleted the entire subsonic music folder via Astro, so had to redownload a couple albums to test this.

Yeah, spent a good hour testing these scenarios on my phone, but the magic music directory would keep showing up in offline mode and songs would get stuck on Downloading 0B (in airplane mode).

The songs and directories are all properly named and play fine with a net connection though, so it's an offline no-net connection issue for me.

How odd...it is 'offline' mode! :p Hope it gets sorted! By the way, is Subsonic in the phones memory or did you install it to SD card?

Yeah, hope it gets sorted too, going on the subway where this is no net connection is killing my music time.

And Subsonic is in the phone memory, stock Nexus One froyo won't allow it to be installed it to SD card.

@BinaryTB:
If possible, could you create a test account for me on your server and give me an example of songs that show this behavior?

I could try reproduce the error on my Nexus One.

Please email me on sindre@activeobjects.no if you can.

Thanks!

Sindre, just saw your post, sorry, but no worries, looks like the offline issue is fixed on my Nexus One now with 1.8.4, thanks! I'll give it a total retest the next time I'm actually headed somewhere on the train, but looks good in normal testing. Perfect...
