Subair through ssh tunnel

Postby wizardai » Wed Feb 02, 2011 12:20 am

Hello,

Everything going out of our network goes through a 'firewall' type device that just asks if we want to continue out. Unless you click "continue" you can't access anything on the outside (designed for http but affects all ports).

For example, in windows 7 we used to have the weather desktop widget. But once that device was put in, it can't update anymore because it hits that verify wall, and since there is no way to click "continue" it just can't update.

So my question is, can we run subair through an ssh tunnel? What I have in mind since I'm on win7 is running putty to my server at home (where my sub server is). So once my connection is established, use maybe 127.0.0.1:4040 to connect to my local machine and then through the tunnel.

Does anyone have any experience with making this work? And for those wondering, changing the port does not work as everything hits that "continue" wall.

Thanks!

So to answer my own question, yes it does work!

I am running my subsonic install from a *nix system.

This is what I did:

1) In putty, you go to connection -> tunnels and do the following:
- check both boxes at the top.
- Source port: 4040
- destination: localhost:4040
- click add
You should now have a line that reads: L4040 localhost:4040
- goto session and save your session

2) Connect to your nix box with putty. (your tunnel is set up automatically each time as long as you saved your session earlier)

3) Open up subair and enter your username & password.
- In the "Server Address" field I entered http://127.0.0.1:4040
- Hit save settings and you should be able to connect to it.

My earlier issue of not being able to connect was because I made an error in my routing.

enjoy!
