Installing on a Windows Home Server Machine

Glad your up! If you use the free WHS domain you can also get to the SS that way. I use Maplegrove.homeserver.com so if I just use that address I get the server default page at port 80, but I can also type maplegrove.homeserver.com:444 and get to the Subsonic instance logon page.
WHS is a great platform for SS.

We just migrated from WHS v1 to WHS 2011 in a classic case of "If it ain't broke don't fix it." I needed to add more hard drives as the server was starting to get tight for space, but the system I had it on only had 4 SATA ports and they were already full. So I bought a new MSI AMD+ Motherboard and a new 65W AMD Deneb 910e 2.6GHz quad core. I tried to "cheat" and just install the new board with the existing drives and update the chipset drivers. WRONG move. Killed a brand new Samsung F3 2 TB drive I was trying to add. Just beat the read/write mechinism to death. Apparently, the chipset and the drivers weren't on the same page, so we scrapped that plan and just bit the bullet and went with a clean install of WHS 2011. All good now except for restoring the data and working out the bugs.

Just installed latest Java (25) and SS 4.4. As usual, no problems. I have read on other posts that someone had trouble after the most recent Java update. I haven't tried just doing the update on my other servers, but the clean 25 install worked just fine.

Now I have to realign all my IP assignments and port numbers and domain names into a more logical design. I use the highest numbers for my static addresses, so to make it easy for an old codger to remember what he's doing I'm going to set up 192.168.1.254 to run SS on 8084/444, 253 is my networked printer, as I don't want to use 443 which is the default WHS port, 192.168.1.252 will run SS on 8082/442, and .250 will run SS on 8080/440.

I kinda hate to leave WHS V1 behind, but it's getting hard to find drives that aren't the new native 4096k format, so as always - upgrade or die.

It's going to be a long week in front of the screens ...

hmm. Yeah, I saw that upgrade - can't remember what they left out of 2011, but remember reading and thinking it was something I used.
We're getting ready for a year of travel (orient, Costa Rica, parts of the US) and are trying to get stuff set up on the server so we can access the data "wherever." Just when I think I "get it," something reminds me I don't.
Trusting we'll find friends willing to let us run cable and install the server, or we may be pushing everything to the cloud.
