For simplicity. The public IP is generally not known to the Subsonic server (and it also cannot know if it's dynamic or not) - whereas the subsonic.org address is known, it supports dynamically changing IPs, and it works both within your lan and from the outside.

Thanks,
Sindre

Just upgraded the WAR file, works great. :D I am really interested in the sharing and Facebook/Twitter integration. As I host my own site and the DNS is handled by DynDNS wouldn't just the domain just need to be used instead of http://MyServer.subsonic.org? Is this expected in the final version, for non-Subsonic.org users to use sharing?

I understand on the LAN this could be a problem, but sharing via FB/Twitter would be over the WAN anyway.

Thank you,

I actually have a subnet for my house, so my subsonic server has the same dedicated IP no matter where I am.

But I would guess not too many people have that.

Request for Self administered URL Prefix

Postby Josh Hawley » Wed Jun 22, 2011 1:09 am

I see that you setup the linking for twitter/facebook to use the myserver.subsonic.org DNS name. While I agree that, as a default, it is a great option for most users(especially the non technical ones), I am one of those that would prefer not to use a subsonic.org host name for a variety of reasons.

Could you please add a setting that allows us to specify the appropriate IP/Host name that is used in shared links as a setting?

Personally, when you get connected, I don't like it displaying my local IP address. Would rather it just showed nothing.. hahah

Peace!

Maybe I'm missing something here, but could we please have a way to limit users' video bitrate? My upload could handle the previous settings, but stress testing with 3000 kbps and 5000 kbps has showed some weaknesses.

I have around 60 users accessing my Subsonic server - many of which use it daily. Don't believe me?

Look:

The 5000 kbps is killing my pipe (FiOS 35/35) which was doing just fine previously.

Thank you so much for this amazing service, regardless!

Rolling back to 4.4 fixed my connection issue (though now I feel like I'm living in the past).

Maybe it my beautiful 64 bitness that's the issue, I know it caused subsonic to act differently in the past (though always better).

again, machine is OS X 10.6.7 64bit, my url would not connect using 4.5.1(beta).

"STATUS: xxxxxx.subsonic.org is registered, but could not connect to it. (ConnectTimeoutException)"

Sharing is awesome but needs management.

Given that the goo.gl links never expire and that when you share something you have no idea who's playing it back. Things could get out of hand fast.

If you share a popular song on facebook it could get spread around and you'd never know since shared playback doesnt show up in your log. It'd just rape your bandwidth.

Need the ability to remove a share after it's created.

OR at least disable one share without disabling them all.

also,
once you create a share and someone goes to it. It fwd's to a link like

http://xxxx.xxxx.xxx.xxx/externalPlayer ... 52e617669&

This link can never be disabled and it can be shared with anyone. It's a permanent backdoor to your content without needing a login/pass that you have no control over.

These two points are exactly why I have disabled the ability to all my users. I second the suggestions. The ability to have the links expire, and two, hide the address...[/b]

This is exactly why it should be an option; because there are lots of people out there that want to configure it in different ways =)

Yikes! That is a major security hole. Maybe add a link management page under settings where you can disable links manually as well as manage expiration timers?

Anyone having trouble adding to playlist?

It would also be nice to be able to share playlist.

I also agree with sharing issues. We need to be able to manage this. It's hard enough when you know the user account. I can't think of what it would be like beyond that.

Thanks

Eww...that's awful. You may want to try creating your own script to limit the bandwidth. In other words, pass the seek value, source file, bit rate, width & height. If the bitrate is higher than you'd like adjust the bitrate & resolution to a suitable value and issue your transcoding commands. That should solve your problem for now.

Hi gang,

I just got back from a break and did an install of 4.5 beta. I can't get any external players to work. Anyone else had any success/problems/fixes with the external player? Mine won't play music or video.

EDIT: Works in IE 9 but not in Chrome or FireFox
