Can't use myname.subsonic.org address any more

Hi,I have Subsonic in a Vortexbox and its main use is streaming my music collection out to whatever pcs, laptops, iPad and mobile phones I happen to be using that day.
I set this up earlier in the year and it worked fine for a while but seems to have stopped now.

I get the message that I'm successfully forwarding port 4040 so it isn't the router.

It says "myname".subsonic.org is registered but could not connect to it (ConnectTimeoutException)

I have a license key so that isn't the issue.

Any ideas?

Test with http://canyouseeme.org from the server to check that the port is actually open.

Yep, the diagnostics on the Subsonic app weren't giving a correct response and needed some further setup on the router with port forwarding.

...and spoke too soon as now it's stopped working again

I've set up port forwarding manually AND port 4040 shows up on the list in UPNP settings on the router but can't reach the host and my subsonic.org address is showing up (NoRouteToHostException). Unticking autosetup in Subsonic so it just uses the manual version doesn't work. Ticking it again brings up the UPNP port on that setting page.

Further efforts added:-

Came back to it after some lunch and port 4040 was blocked again... Messed around in the router UPnP settings without actually changeing anything and port 4040 came back on stream!

I'm using http://canyouseeme.org/ so I'm not suffering loopback in trying to check the port from within the LAN. I'm also using portforward.com to try and set it up, which says you need port 80 and port 4040 open to make Subsonic work. I can't get port 80 to ping though.

You do not need port 80 for SS to work just the designated port (4040 in your case).
A couple of things to check
1) Make sure your server firewall is allowing SS full access
2) Also make sure the server is on a static IP within your LAN
3) And check that nothing else is trying to use port 4040

You're right - I've set up Subsonic on my windows laptop and it defaults to port 80. This laptop version of Subsonic works fine Port 80 and port 4040 appear on the UPNP list in the router setup and everything's fine for Windows Subsonic, but the Vortexbox version only works for a few seconds then fails.


A couple of things to check
1) Make sure your server firewall is allowing SS full access - Server firewall rules allow outgoing traffic by default. I've set up a rule for inbound services so that the Vortexbox can be accessed.
2) Also make sure the server is on a static IP within your LAN - I've reserved IP addresses for all the commonly attached machines on the network, including the Vortexbox.
3) And check that nothing else is trying to use port 4040 - Aha, could be an idea but how would I check what else is using this port??

What I've noticed using my laptop as the GUI to control Vortexbox Subsonic is the following:



In the UPNP setup page section of my router, port 4040 is listed, but it comes up as 127.0.0.1 rather than the VB's IP address, (incidentally this is 192.168.5.3), which suggests it's trying to loop back to the PC I'm using as a controller for the VB rather than port forwarding the Vortexbox's address.

Port 80 where I've set up Subsonic on a laptop lists the IP address of the PC it runs on, which seems correct.

I've now disabled the Subsonic setting that tries to set up my router automatically based on the info I got from my router (above) and so far it seems to be working…



Subair now works on my desktop. ISub now works on the iPad.
