OK that appears to be OK so the mystery remains - why is that artist not appearing in the left frame :?
There is only one thing I can think of to try and that is to delete the jetty cache.
Just stop SS and go to subsonic/jetty/xxxx/jsp/org/apache/jsp/
Delete everything in that folder then restart SS.

OK, I tried that, and... nothing changed.

After that failure, I spent about half an hour thrashing around and I eventually did successfully get the latest backlog of new Artist folders to show up by doing some combination of a re-install, force-refresh, and Skywalker's "copy one of the 'missing' Artist folders to a new directory, add that directory, switch view to 'all folders', etc." method from earlier in this thread. Absent a magic bullet from someone else, I guess I'll resign myself to repeating this exercise once a week or so for the foreseeable future. I am still running 4.5, so I have a faint (probably naive) hope that maybe once I update to 4.6, this issue will magically go away.

BKKKPewsey, thanks sincerely for your help with this (you too, djandrius, Skywalker, et al) - I really do appreciate your efforts to help me get to the bottom of this.

Remove outdated Artist listings from the left panel?

Postby Boutros » Thu Dec 01, 2011 3:52 pm

I recently did a reorganization of my directory. I had previously stored everything in one big folder (J:\Music\Artist\Album), but I want to segregate multi-artist compilations, comedy, audiobooks, etc.

So far I've created two new folders (J:\Comedy and J:\Compilations) and cut/pasted the corresponding folders over to them. When I toggle over to those folders via the dropdown in the left panel, all of those Artist folders show up as they should.

HOWEVER - when I view the original "Music" folder in the left-hand pane, I still see listings for all of the artists whose folders I've moved into the new directories. Is there a way to remove these now-obsolete listings from the artist list in the original folder?

Thanks in advance.

Remove the music folder from subsonic's media folders - let the left frame refresh and then add the folder back in.
This will ensure SS does a rescan of that folder.

Edit: Just realised who was asking so in your case that may not work :?

One thing you didn't mention is, do the newly added artists/albums show up in the recently added tab?

Yes - after an Update Search Index operation, they show up in the Recently Added tab, and they're Searchable - they're just not in what I'd like to be the "Master List" in the left panel.

Thanks BKKK - this didn't work for me, but... based on the "left panel" issues I'm dealing with in the other thread, I shouldn't be surprised...

I probably should have just started one master thread with the subject "Boutros' Left Panel: Abandon All Hope Ye Who Enter Here" :D

As the problem you are having is associated with the artist display problem I am merging this thread with the other one.
There does appear to be a problem with that initial music directory - have you tried renaming it to say "My Music" and then add that to SS.

Good call on merging these two threads - it's all just part of my contrarian installation - shows me the artist listings I don't want to see, won't show me the ones I do.

So, I'll try moving these Artist folders into a new "Music v2" folder tonight - I'd sort of done something like that when this problem first presented itself, though. Initially, all Artist folders were on the root level of that drive (J:\Beatles, J:\Beatnigs, etc.). I thought that might be part of the problem so I moved them all into the J:\Music sub-folder.

OK, that worked... sort of. It did clear the no-longer-present folders. However, when I make additional changes, they're not reflected, so I have to re-rename the folder to get it to refresh. This is... OK, but kind of a bummer as of course all my counts, comments, Recently Played, Most Played, etc. get wiped out. Oh well.

Do you think it's possible that if I did a total re-install (i.e. wiping out all logs, indexes, etc.), and started over from scratch, it would be more likely to behave normally going forward? I know the system isn't designed for people to have to do this much manual kick-starting every time new music gets added to it.

You could give it a try :|
You may already answered this, but this thread is getting rather long (I might need to split it into chapters :D )
but what browser are you using?

I would suggest chrome as a few people seem to be having issues with the latest Firefox and I.E is well.......!!!

When you add a new folder to your music directory (after refreshing frame or page) it should appear immediately in the left frame.
(In Chrome right click the left frame and select reload frame)
I added a directory (empty) to my music folder with the name "Basie , Count" (to test whether the "," was causing a problem or if SS just didn't like jazz 8) ) and after refreshing the left frame it appeared immediately under "B".
Note: No re-indexing or any other manual "messing about" - it just worked :P

To recap: If your music in say x:\music\artist\albums\songs then you enter x:\music as your media folder

So, typing this from inside Chrome :)

That SEEMS to be doing the trick, with the vestigial folders finally disappearing, and some subsequent shuffling I've done since showing up correctly as well after the frame reloads. I haven't imported any completely new artist folders and albums to the drive yet, so I'm crossing my fingers until I can try out that use case tomorrow, but it feels like this might be workable - Chrome is growing on me anyway.

Who knew the answer could end up being "change your browser"?!

Just thought I should update this thread to reflect my experience with this issue, as I have a feeling I'm not the only Windows user to experience this.

It turns out that switching to Chrome didn't really help me much.

Through a lot of trial and error, what SEEMS to be working pretty reliably for me is this:

1. Add new Artist folder in my media folder
2. Add new Album sub-folder to #1
3. Update search index now
3a. Go get a cup of coffee to wait for this to finish (optional)
4. Go to Settings->Media Folders
5. Delete the last letter of your media folder(s) then type it back in
6. Save
7. Switch Folder view via the dropdown in the left pane to "All Folders"
8. Switch Folder view back to my "Artists" folder, at which point it should update and display the new additions

This is admittedly a little hack-y, but it seems to be working for me pretty consistently. I tore out a lot of hair over this issue, so having a resolution (even if it's a bit klugy) is a great relief to me. I'd be curious to see if anyone else who's had trouble with this shows similar results.

Have a similar issue here.

Boutros "fix" seemed to have worked a few times, but now it just doesn't. The problem is actually not new albums that don't show up, but new artists. If I add a new album from an artist that is on the list on the left pane the album shows up without a problem.

My library is /artist/album
and /compilations/album

New artists show up in the search index, so I can still listen to new added albums but it still is annoying.

edit: Fixed for now. Rename folders to something that doesn't exist, deleting browser history, cookies and cache, stopping subsonic, restarting subsonic. Restarting apache & that several times seems to have solved it.

Hey Joris -

Yeah, I hadn't had the heart to come back to this thread, but my "fix" (such as it was) proved not to be persistent, so I'm still dealing with this issue, and have kind of given up on it being resolved. You're correct that it's specifically a problem with creating new Artist folders - adding new Albums to existing Artist folders works fine.

My brother-in-law, who is more tech savvy than I, noted that, at least in Windows setups like mine, it seems to be a problem when the Subsonic installation lives on a different drive than the media folders, as is the case in my setup (on a simple external HD, not a networked share). He did some testing on his laptop and showed me how, when his media folders lived on the C: drive along with his SS installation, the left-hand panel updated with new Artist folders pretty much instantly, as they should. But when the media folder is on an external drive... not so much.

The worst part is that it WILL update every once in a while, but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it, so I end up grasping for "whatever I did last," thinking that might be the secret incantation I need to utter going forward to make it work, but... it never is.

I'm curious if Sindre might be able to weigh in on this - it really is pretty frustrating. If this were resolved in a way that didn't involve an elaborate sequence of folder-renaming, cookie-clearing, SS-restarting, etc., I would almost certainly donate for the third time, just out of sheer relief.
