Music skips/hiccups when closing OS windows

Postby ggibby » Tue Sep 18, 2012 5:37 pm

Hello Paul,

The updates have made a big difference - keep rockin'!

On my main SubWiji machine:
Win7x86
1.8GHz
3GB RAM usable
+/- 7.6Mb web connection

playback works fine, until I minimize/restore a window, then it hiccoughs (hiccups?), pausing for a frame or two.
Not when actually opening and closing, just moving to the taskbar.
As I'm at work and doing this all the time, it's a bit annoying.

Apologies if this is known and previously discussed.

Hi,
A few things to try since wpf is a resource hog...
Try changing the settings for a slower system this tunes down the wfp a bit.
Also check your stream buffer crank that up to see if it helps.
If these don't help let me know and when I'm back ill have a look
Cheers
Paul

Stream pre-buffer is at max - 2min.
WPF = Windows Presentation Foundation? WFP?
Don't know where/how to adjust that.

I did disable Windows Explorer animations, but no change.
Also - the interrupt occurs with Maximize/Restore Down also.

Ha yes I meant to say WPF sorry!
It's on the system speed setting, cant remember atm and not at my computer to look.
The suttering is it when any window is sized or just SubWiji windows?
Also what's the upload of your subsonic server and how much of that is just for your user?
From what you have said about the buffer it may be am issue with your CPU, is it dual core? What sort of CPU percentage use is SubWiji and the rest of the pc using?
Thanks

Any window minimize/restore/max/restore down
Not sure about 'upload' on Subsonic, but I'm the only SS user
and the server hardware is spec'd below.

User CPU is dual-core, and SubWiji is +/-50%, looks like alternating between cores.
RAM usage is really flat.

Seems a bit much on the processor, to me.

Yeah that is lot of CPU and that's where the issue is.
Firstly check that your client pc has the latest .net installed.
Also if you find the setting in Subwiji which will tone down the CPU useage it has low medium and high settings.

Another thing that can help is to check that your my music folder is accessible, go to settings and try to things with cover art cache off.

Yup, according to Windows Update, my .NET 4 Client Profile is all current.
paulodell wrote:Also if you find the setting in Subwiji which will tone down the CPU useage it has low medium and high settings.

Do you mean the Interface Settings>UI Quality? That's been at Low.
paulodell wrote:Another thing that can help is to check that your my music folder is accessible, go to settings and try to things with cover art cache off.

'Cache cover art' has always been turned off. There were a few .jpgs in My Music, but not from SubWiji.

And I double-checked the SubSonic server Advanced settings - all network options are set to unlimited.

Our internet connection is variable (6 to 14 users on cable modem through a retail router).
Would CPU load vary with bandwidth?

I know its strange but try running SubWiji with cache cover art on as a lot of the UI is for the covers and when cached it can help.
Also test SubWiji with the UI on the different levels to see what that does with the CPU, that setting is old and may have been broke/affected by updates.
I think the bandwidth just affects the pre buffer size needed, I have only 4 users but also only 800k upload so my buffer is low.
Thanks

I'll try those, but I have always had 'Fetch Cover Art' off - it's not important to me.

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html

Your bug report above will not most probably not help you achieve your goal, a Windows Subsonic Client that works perfectly on your machine, for free.

If the application doesn't give any log when it crashes, try attaching screen shots, steps on how to reproduce the crash etc.

Or at least try re-phrasing your post into something like "this mod seems to have great potential, but it often crashes. how can I help you debug it?"

How could the crashes be fixed if you don't contribute any actual input on how and when they happen?

This has been fixed, a new version is going to be pushed out soon.

The "freezing" happens for about 30 seconds, and then the application starts up fine.

I've just pushed that fix out.
See if you can bring yourself to try it, remember this program is free and we don't get paid to create or maintain it...

I must be missing something, but I no longer see a way to set my Last.FM user/pass. I see the switch and regardless of if it's enabled or disabled, I still get no where to put in credentials (and I hadn't previously entered them).

Also, I'm experiencing some issues with certain MP3s stuttering toward the end of the song. It doesn't happen with all files, just an album here and there. I assume it has to do with how they're encoded, but was wondering if you had run in to that issue? I think I'm just going to blanket re encode them with a standard LAME vbr and see if that helps.
