Album art issue - weird colour effects

Postby phillipmcmahon » Sun Mar 22, 2015 9:19 pm

I have noticed that all my album art preview in places are showing differently depending on where I view them.

The top level view (i.e All, Random) most album art is fine. There are some instances where art is washed out and outlined.
When clicking into an album (which otherwise looks to have a proper album art preview) I always get the washed out/outlined version.
Clicking on this washed out/outlined version then shows me a good version.

All my album art is available as folder.jpg in each album folder. Additionally the majority of the files also have the album art embedded. Where I am seeing issues in Subsonic I have checked the following;

1) The local folder.jpg displays correctly in a number of image viewers
2) The embedded art work displays correctly in iTunes, VLC etc.
3) The file plays correctly and is not corrupted.

It is present in the web interface and also exposed via the Sonos feed so I presume it has something to do with the image parsing options and resizing activity when reading the files.

I have attached a few screenshots to show exactly what I mean.

Anyone else having this issue?

I totally removed the app. Killed both the Application and Application Support directory.

Reinstalled the app and added my folders. All seems fine... Strange.

Could this be some database corruption somehow?

there still looks to be issues with the art work database and imaging changes.

i have reinstalled again from a fresh install and there are numerous examples of the wrong picture being shown for albums, incorrect and colour damaged previews etc. The one thing that is consistent is when finally clicking the view the artwork the correct version is shown.

from fresh installs to reindexing there is definitely something not right happening with the artwork code.

any help from anyone...?

I have this problem in a few instances as well. See the attached shot of the Moanin' cover with washout/negative rendering in normal view, then with correct color rendering when the cover is clicked on and zoomed.

The problem is the size of the artwork. Subsonic croaks if it is too big. Bit Sindre has never answered as to exactly what specs for cover art are needed. If you resize to 200x200, the pics will be correct.

i don't think it is size. I have no issues with 1436px images all the way down to (granted, fuzzy) 64px.

I think it is an endian problem. The images that get distorted may be 'backwards' from the bit-order that subsonic expects when it does the resizing.

I have 2 in particular that still do this in my collection. I just took one, loaded it in an editor (Mac Preview app), tweaked the brightness a little and re-saved it, and now it renders just fine.

Opening the image then re-saving the image in a program like irfanview fixes this problem. Just don't forget to refresh!

Thanks to everyone replying. I don't think size in itself is the issue. I have about 2,300 albums and corresponding covers. The covers are all 500x500 px and range from 25k to 150k in size. Only very few have this problem, maybe 5 or 6, and they are not the biggest ones. The Moanin' cover shown is 64k, 500x489. I do use irfanview to resize and sometimes MS paint and Roxio photosuite. My guess is that something funkier is amiss, I just don't know what.

Pleased to say that I've worked out how to fix this issue, by forcing a rebuild of all thumbnail images.

Resized artwork is generated the first time subsonic tries to load artwork when rendering a page (or when accessed via the API).
On OSX The resized artwork is stored here:

\Library\Application Support\Subsonic\thumbs

I shut down Subsonic, and renamed the folder thumbs as thumbs.backup and restarted Subsonic. The app them recreated the thumbs directory and started populating it with artwork for albums I browsed. Previously 'corrupted' thumbnails were recreated without corruption. All is right with the world again.

This bug is still present on my 6.0 beta1 instance on a small subset of thumbnails.
Whatever the workaround is for this issue, the bug should not exist at all.
A java library for resizing might be responsible of this.

I uploaded a screenshot to help diagnose the matter, and one 500*500 jpeg file causing problems to subsonic.
