Palm Pre App

Have you considered making an app for the Palm Pre since it runs JS?

No, I'm prioritizing making an app for Android. However, Subsonic 3.8 will come with a cross-platform development API, so if anybody wants to make a Subsonic client on Palm Pre or any other platform, that should be possible.

We need to talk sometime soon. I think you could kill 2 birds with one stone considering that the Pre is linux and mostly JS. Shouldn't be too hard ot port it over.

I second this idea. The Pre is mainly JS and HTML so coding should be much easier.. if anyone needs any help I am willing to test. I am not a programmer per se, but I may be able to help out...

Palm App Status

Postby omerp118 » Tue May 11, 2010 5:12 pm

Just checking to see if there are still plans for an app running on Palm phones. With HP's purchase of Palm, Web OS should be expanding to new users and devises. Hopefully an app is still in the works.

I'd love a WebOS app. The WAP feature doesn't work from my Pre and I'd love to be able to stream my music collection to my Pre and have basic controls via a WebOS app.

I don't have my free money, but I'd be willing to donate a few extra dollars towards this effort.

I'm coming here for another vote to port Subsonic to WebOS. I came here because Simplify Music is now terminating their service as Google bought them and is now incorporating the technology into Android. That makes further development on Android to be a loosing proposition to you and I would imagine developing tech for a system that already has that tech baked into the OS is a waste of resources.

Simplify was the most used program on iOS for streaming your collection and now that it closed it's doors, your left with a big opportunity on your hands. I have both an iPhone and a Pre and would love a single client for both, and I'm more than willing to pay for it.

As it is now, the only real streaming apps that takes your local files online are Ampache Mobile and AmpachPre, both of which are way too complicated to set up for the average user. If you could streamline the already simple process you have now and promote the program in an area that is lacking the service, you could be very successful. Blackberry needs one, iOS definitely needs one and most definitely WEBOS HAS A LEGION OF USERS THAT WOULD BUY THIS.

You already have the backbone built up should you decide to build for webOS. You could either port the iPhone version over using Palm's PDK+SDK suite that'll be released soon, or you could spend a just couple hours taking the already existing web interface that you have and skinning it for webOS. It's almost trivial how easy this would be and you could get a large return should you choose to charge for it, which I highly suggest you do.

I'm more than willing to act as a guinea pig here, and would entertain any and all testing you would need for webOS. There is also a TON of incredibly dedicated users at the precentral.net forums that can help too, and the precentral.net editors are always helping developers by spotlighting new apps and homebrew endeavors, though I don't think you should go the homebrew route.

With HP's acquisition of Palm and a new phone coming out in the next 2 months or so, you have a golden opportunity here to make some good money for not a lot of work, as well had helping a lot of people. Get in on the ground floor and you will prosper.

I have been running both ampache and subsonic in the hopes to one day have just subsonic. I only have ampache for ampache mobile on the pre. I did speak with the developer of ampache mobile and he indicated he may look at creating a subsonic version in the fall.

subsonic is far superior to ampache in many ways, and I have recently donated to show my support.

I've started working on a basic WebOS based app. Got basic browsing and logging in going. Hoping to have something to show by the end of summer.

Cool! What language are you using? C, C++, JavaScript, ... ?

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions regarding the Subsonic REST API.

I'm just using the standard WebOS SDK, so Javascript and HTML (Palm's version). The REST API is pretty good, I was able to get a working prototype where you can set your server preferences and then browse a collection going in less than a week. Next up is getting the HTML5 audio to work.

Though... it looks like this issue with the API:

http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2746

is going to be a show stopper for me. WebOS uses HTML to do it's audio rendering. I'll work on other features till this is fixed.

Any updates on this?

I'd be happy to ditch ampache and use subsonic exclusively.

I'm a web developer, so if any help is needed, please let me know.
