suggestions for organizing collection, when I can't touch it

My music collection is also hooked up to a few other apps that require the music files to remain untouched. Even modifying exif data will change the file, and I can't do that. I'm looking for suggestions on how to organize my hodge-podge collection without touching any of the files. Anyone? thanks!

I know of software that will let you create a database file and associate information with those files without changing them. That database wouldn't be used by Subsonic, though.

I think you may be going deep down the rabbit hole for a solution.
