Re: Subsonic 6.0 released

Postby jjbrash2012 » Wed May 04, 2016 12:49 pm

Hi - I just upgraded my Subsonic to 6.0 and loving it so far! I'm running subsonic in a Tomcat8 server - very straightforward upgrade for the app.

One question - after loggin in to 6.0 as admin for the first time I noticed that the transcoding settings for video formats has disappeared. Does the new player not require these settings anymore? Is ffmpeg not required any more for video streaming?

Thanks - Justin

I already posted it into the thread for the beta2:
The options to remove selected items from the playing queue are missing. See screenshot:

If Subsonic turn into this sort of closed software, i suggest to fork the last free sources into github and leave the community build they're own subsonic server !
I think this could be great, having tonnes of developers who find solution that Sindre sometimes override with closed softwares ...

Well you made a great job Sindre, but now i don't understand this step !
Leave you some time to find better solutions ! Make a beta3 !

( I don't know much in Licenses and GPLV3 but i think we can fork you're project ? )

Lets create a topic about that ! ( maybe fork the project into Github ? )

Sindre, this is not the way things should be done.

I heard about you closing source code on Subsonic 6.0 from users moving to Ampache. Sure it enlarge Ampache community... but I would barely being satisfied with that.
As I already discussed with you, I don't really care which application is used as long there is an overall benefits on the media open source community in the long run. The only problem with alternatives on open source is that it tends to split the community, which is why Subsonic API compatibility was added to Ampache: to partially merge communities, at least on some subjects. But here you're harming the community.

I can understand your personal choice (time, money, etc... ; according to your real life situation this can override your ideals) but then be honest and do it properly.
If the problem is really external components licensing, this can be resolved through optional modules as pointed out by others. Now you really got some focus :) so you should take the opportunity to ask for what you really need if this can prevent the project going to the dark side (if time, ask for help ; ...). Or please explain what is the real motivation behind this choice, this would at least be interesting for general knowledge to know why an open source project failed.
By doing properly I mean what others said again: even if you are the main contributor you are not authorized to move from GPL to another license without all contributors agreement. Talking about my experiences again but this is what I had to do recently to move Ampache from GPLv2 to APGLv3, see https://github.com/ampache/ampache/issues/954. And you shouldn't have moved to this licensing change without an official communication, it broke trust.

He actually moved to github during the Beta. I was excited, cloned, and added a couple of minor pull requests. At some point it got removed though and he just put up the 5.3 version up in its place.

While I am sad that he chose to go this way, part of the reason I chose Subsonic in the first place was due to it being open source so I could keep going if the dev ever decided to go AWOL. The community might get fractured but at least it can continue at all.

My Internet Radio problems ("Unsupported media format" in 6.0.beta2), post here http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=70709#p70709, still continue after upgrading to 6.0. Can't get any streams to work, whether they are mp3, pls or m3u. Getting a new error message though, "html5: Video file not found".

It seems that loading album artwork from URL doesn't work anymore - no errors, artwork just doesn't show up.

If an Artist is missing the top songs, but the top songs are listed in Last.fm for that artist, does someone know how to add them in the Artist profile?

I agree with others here. Being a coder myself, I know there are many approaches toward keeping proprietary keys out of source code. If that really is the reason I'm sure many would be happy to help sort it out.

If it's just a smokescreen for wanting to close the source, that's obviously your choice, but I'd just ask what you really hope to gain from closing it? This is already a hacker-ish product. Maybe you could instead make a concerted open-source push with the code on github, nurture the coder community, and ultimately sell a better product that expands user-base and for which more people are happy to pay.

I've registered with the forum solely to express my dissatisfaction with this change:
  • Such an important change should have been communicated clearly and in advance, not given only in response to a question on a forum;
  • Significant issues concerning licensing and the ramifications of changing licensing have been raised, with no response;
  • You posted on this issue on April 30. It is now May 7. People have been asking for clarification, and even offering helpful suggestions, with not a single reply from you. To be silent on such an important issue can communicate only disregard for your users, customers, contributors and the open source community;
  • I had paid for the first year and, upon renewal in April, had set up a yearly recurring payment - that has now been cancelled;
  • I had been planning to submit some enhancements; those will be going to LibreSonic once the timing is appropriate;
I'm sorry you've not only made this change but have made it in such an inappropriate and disrespectful manner. I understand your need to see some return for your investment in this project, but this is not the way to go about it.

Frankly, I hate the update...

The new UI is not really effective for very large media libraries. I have 1/2 TB of music ranging over 40 years of artist. My Video library is about 30 TBs and sectioned off into categories but Paragraph style text links really are not a convenient means to get through it all...

Adding to that the inability to set the play rate manually means that I am at the mercy of the Best Guess of the application as to what speed is best. I travel and have to deal with hotel wifi -- really not the best at getting a decent and stable signal. I would prefer to set a low rate that spend long periods of 'please wait' while the transcoder sets, resets, sets, resets... etc.

Two Thumbs WAY DOWN on these decisions. As I have posted elsewhere... WTF were you thinking..?!

Please do the following:
1: provide a UI down grade to the EXACT previous UI
2: Restore the manual bit rate selector. For those of us that travel it is a HUGE issue.
