not interested in Premium

Postby dragonstar0828 » Fri Nov 01, 2019 5:31 pm

So I've been using Subsonic just to share music for a while and am getting a message about my trial period expiring - I didn't even know there was a trial period.

In any case there's not a single feature in the Premuim version that I'm interested in - is there any way I can just continue to use the basic version?

I tried emailing support a few days ago and haven't gotten a reply, which is why I'm posting here to see if anyone can assist me.

Thanks in advance for any help.

yes. the basic version primarily just means you don't have 2 features. 1, the ability to use a <something>.subsonic.org url (which I never use), and 2, the ability to use external apps and the API. The importance of the latter is up to you.

but there's no tech limit on the number of files you can have or the bitrates you can use. Those are just part of the basic service.

Thanks for the info Josh, but without the .org url how do I access my files via a browser outside the house?

Further on the machine (Windows 10) it's installed on when I access it via ip and port it's there but not functional i.e. no matter what tab or option I click on nothing happens.

So how do I get it functioning again as well as being able to play the music files from some device outside the house?

You'll need to set up on your computer a dynamic DNS service.

Try https://www.noip.com

You run a tiny program on your computer that looks up your current online IP and sets it to the free domain name which they provide and you then use to refer to your Subsonic Server.

Thanks Quatermass, I'll give it a try.

So why is it when I'm on the machine the server is installed on and am referencing it by ip and port in my browser I can log in as admin but nothing's working?

NEVER MIND...

I figured out why connecting directly wasn't working, for some reason the machine where SS is installed got a new internal IP.

Frakin' technology... ... rolls eyes...

Will try the "noip" option later, or perhaps tomorrow morning depending on my schedule.

Your Router is giving out IP to all your devices in order of switch on by the DHCP service.

So, you change that switch on order, your PC gets a different IP. Go into the Router Web page and reserve your PC to a fixed IP. :)

Yeah I know what it's doing, it only happens once in a great while and has never been that big a deal.

But yes if it happened a lot I'd assign a fixed IP to one or more machines in the house.

I'm happy enough that with that knowledge in hand music can be played again inside the house, I'll visit the noip thing eventually so the files can be accessed outside the house.

dyndns is another option

(disclaimer: i work for Oracle, but not for that product which they acquired in the last couple of years; i was a customer of the service before they were acquired and am still content with their service).

Thanks Joe.

I'll look at both, though first blush noip gets the nod as it has a free option and dynds doesn't appear to have one - if I wanted to pay for something I would have just signed up for SS premium to begin with.

They did have a free option when I first signed on, before the acquisition. I can respect the decision to go the other route if you just need the one IP option to play.

I'm not that much in a rush to get it working outside the house.

I set this up for myself and a bunch of friends who all contributed there CD collection and not a single one of them has chimed in that they can't access it anymore.

So after all my work if none of them are using SS to access the library I put together (about 30k tracks so far) then I have better things to spend my time on then getting it working for them if no one is bothering with it.

So as long as I have it working inside the house, I'm happy enough for the moment.
