Disk access question...

Postby DanJ1975 » Thu Feb 26, 2009 10:52 am

First of all let me just say how fantastic Subsonic is and how much I appreciate how much effort must have gone into the development of it... I am a developer myself and can see the thought and effort that has gone into subsonic. I have donated and am actively using your software and am recommending it to everyone who will listen!

One issue i am seeing however is that subsonic is constantly accessing the hard drive on my machine. Basically every 10-15 seconds there is a short burst of disk access activity. Whilst this isn't a big issue I am curious as to whether this is just due to indexing and if there is any way i can stop it? My server is practically silent and it is slightly irritating when the drives burst into life ever 10 seconds... I know i am fussy!

I am 100% certain that subsonic is the application accessing the disk as i have monitored the disk activity and if i uninstall subsonic it no longer happens.

I have used the standard windows install to the c drive and am running xp pro with service pack 3. I am running using RAID 1 although i doubt this is an issue.

Any advice or suggestions would be great.
Thanks again,
Dan

Hi Dan,

Try closing the Subsonic tray icon and see if it disappears. The tray icon process polls for status every 10 seconds, and perhaps that's causing the disk traffic.

Pls let me know if this helps.

Actually, the polling (of Windows service status) can turned off completely as long the Subsonic Control Panel is not open.

I'll try to fix that for the next release.

Yep that has fixed it. Brilliant. Thanks for such a quick reply.
I doubt i would use the tray icon once everything is up and running anyway.

Excellent!

To disable the tray icon, simply remove "Subsonic" from the Startup folder in the start menu.

Thanks,

Hi,

I have had this same problem on my ubuntu server, except, the activity light for the HDD is always on orange, it never goes to green except when the thing is shut down, the subsonic HDD also gets very hot when its running, the others don't seem to get that hot.

Is there a solution for the linux people out there?

I'll try putting some music on another HDD and see if the problem persists with that drive too.

Thanks in advance!
