newbie help: cannot find music folder on network drive

music folder is on a D-link network drive. Shows up under "My computer" as "Volume_1 (\\dlink-59C1E7) (F:)", but can't seem to have subsonic find it.

Music directory is "complete-music-collection, so what should path be?

I tried:

1) F:\complete-music-collection (and F:\complete-music-collection\)

2) F:\\complete-music-collection (but it eliminates the double forward slash when I try to save it)

3) F:\complete-music-collection\ (also eliminates last backslash)

4) \\dlink-59C1E7)\complete-music-collection

5) \\F:complete-music-collection\ (all slashes are eliminated when trying to save)

What am I doing wrong?

By default subsonic runs under a special user.

You might need to set subsonic service to use a username/password that have access to to the network drive. The correct path you should use would be:

4) \\dlink-59C1E7)\complete-music-collection

Thanks, but please clarify how to "set subsonic service to use a username/password that have access to to the network drive.". Do I have to create a new user or can I modify admininstrator settings?

Also, since the correct path you put had only one parentheses , was the other one missing or do I not use at all:

so do I use:

1) "\\(dlink-59C1E7)\complete-music-collection

or

2) \\dlink-59C1E7\complete-music-collection

choices are:

1) "/"
2) "/music"
3) /subsonic

also I tried changing username/pw for "administrator" on subsonic to same as network drive and it did not work

You need to go into:

Controlpanel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management

Chose Services

Find Subsonic and chose properties on it.

Chose the Log On tab

Select This account and type in the username and password for a user that have access to the network drives.

Restart the Subsonic service.


About the path. I did not notice that there was a parent in it. Copy & pasted it from your list. The correct path is:

\\machinename\sharename

\\dlink-59C1E7\complete-music-collection

and there is nothing in there.

It is going to depend on what OS you are in. Obviosly if you have a Start button its windows of some sort.

In XP it is Start --> Control Panel --> Admin Tools --> Services

Ok so I followed your instructions and changed the username and p/w to what the network drive is, restarted the service and same issue :

"No music folders found. Please change the settings."

the path is as you said it should be:

"\\dlink-59C1E7\complete-music-collection"

any ideas what I should try next?

I also never got an answer to my earlier question about what should context path be in control panel. Choices are:

1) "/"
2) "/music"
3) /subsonic

Just realized that I did not let you know that the network drive is behind a router and has a static IP address. What should port forwarding be? I know port in control panel is set to port 80, so should I forward port 80 on router to static IP?

so I changed the port in the control panel to 800 (instead of 80) and forwarded that to the static IP of the network drive and...

no resolution- same problem (ugh!)

You should map whatever way you can access it from your PC. So if you can go to start --> run and type in \\server\complete-music-collection then that is how it works

If you access your file share through your network places then it should be in the top of the Windows Exporer screen in the same area that you would type a URL name in Internet Explorer.

It doesnt matter if you choose / /music or /subsonic that is just a personal preference. It just changes the url where your site is located.

try replacing the machine name with the static ip you have set. leave everything on port 80 to save yourself some headaches. port forwarding won't do anything for you bc it only forwards traffic from the internet to a computer behind your router.

SMB shares can be finicky. you can also try smb://username:password@ipaddress:port/ ... ollection/

see if that works, but be advised, it's obviously not very secure lol

Ok, something is not right here since at command prompt I enter :
"\\dlink-59C1E7\complete-music-collection" and it does not find that network.

now I am running Vista (FYI) and I access the drive NOT via Network places but rather it is mapped as drive "F", so I tried substituting, as in:

\\F or \\F: and it does not work

Ok, so I changed port back to 80 in Subsonic CP, and then replaced the machine name with the static IP (for path to music folder I assume, like:
"\\192.168.1.20\complete-music-collection" and that did nothing.

Regarding SMB- I have no idea what that is nor where I would implement the URL you refer to "smb://username:password@ipaddress:port/complete-music-collection/"

Please advise where to put this- in music path?
