Subsonic Kiosk

Postby pino_otto » Sun Jun 21, 2009 1:56 pm

After building the virtual machine for running the Subsonic server:

http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1899

today I made a virtual machine for creating a Subsonic web kiosk:

enjoy

PS: I'm uploading it now to the server, so it will be available soon.

Here you can find more information about kiosk:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiosk_software

In practice, a Subsonic Web Kiosk is a computer, where the user can only use the web browser (nothing else), which has been configured to have the subsonic page as the default homepage.

The kiosks are useful for using computers in public places, such as hotel, airport, school, etc. where you don't want to provide full access to the computer.

I have a couple of these kiosk systems at home booting TinyXP off a compact flash card. Since they are both using wireless network cards, there is a small delay after the auto-logon where the WLAN isn't available. The Internet Explorer instance would load up before network connectivity was established, and would come up with a "Page cannot be displayed" error.

Refreshing would solve the problem, but to make it cleaner, I created a script to launch Internet Explorer in kiosk mode once the Subsonic server became available across the network.

I can post the code once I get home, if that would be of any use.

Yup, used to develop software like this... I wasn't sure if it was this or you mod'd in some chat software. We call the chat box on my subsonic the "kiosk" cuz it's where people post announcements and requests and stuff.
