FriendlyName pointing to wrong IP address

Postby icaveman » Wed Dec 14, 2011 2:26 pm

I hope this is the appropriate place to post this question. I did look at other forums before asking this question, but it seems unlikely that nobody else has experienced this problem, so apologize if the answer lies somewhere else in the forum. If so, please let me know.

I spent A LOT of time trying to figure this out on my own, without any luck. So, here is the issue:

I set up my subsonic account the first time with essentially no problems. It set it up automatically and issued my requested FriendlyName. But, within 24 hours I was unable to access my account except from the local machine. What I mean by that is whereas I was able to logon remotely with another machine or device using the FriendlyName, that no longer worked.

I followed instructions the were provided by the detailed information through the subsonic technical guide and similar sources. Ultimately I was able to successfully set everything up. However, any FriendlyName I try, including both the original and other names attempted when the original one quit working, no longer work. They either time out, or simply take me to subsonic's main webpage.

I suspected some type of issue with a cookie, etc. but I attempted access from other machines and get the same result. What appears most relevant to me is that I can tell that the FriendlyName points to an IP address that is different from the external IP address used by my router. The IP address that comes up when I use the FriendlyName is one associated with a Lacie Big Disk, which has an IP address of 10.208.75.100. If you google that IP and Lacie Big Disk, for some reason that external hard drive is treated as a network. I would note that I first had subsonic set up the original port forwarding, and friendly name assignment. I suspect that it all quit working when the Lacie Big Disk IP address somehow got tied or assigned to my subsonic friendly name.

Bottom line, even though I can successfully access my machine (and subsonic's control panel, player, etc) and it all works, it only does so if I input into the browser or another device (both Android X and iPad work) fine) the actual IP address of my routher.

Question is, how do I make the IP address that works associated with the FriendlyName I obtain from subsonic.org

I hope that is adequate to frame the question. Thank you very much if you can assist with this issue.

I assume you mean your "myname.subsonic.org" url.
If you go to settings/network and hit the save button that will update the subsonic.org address and will also tell you if there is a problem.

Does the machine running SS have more than one ethernet adapter or wireless adapter? Simply put, is there more than one network connection on that machine?

I had a similar kind of issue, reported here: http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8432

Long story short, I disabled the other network connection on my SS server, clicked the "save" button on the network settings page, and all was good.

More info on machine, OS, SS version, etc. may help diagnose problem.

After a little reading on the LaCie EBD you mentioned, it looks like it's configuring itself as another network connection on your machine. You're running Windows, right?

Try disabling that network connection temporarily, then saving the network settings in Subsonic, then re-enabling the LaCie EBD.

Thank you each for the feedback. And, it worked. Just so others may benefit from my experience, here is the feedback I would have given had it not worked. :)

I tried multiple times to go to settings/network and hit the save button. It actually would not update the subsonic.org address no matter what I entered for the friendly name. It did tell me that there was a problem each time, saying "myname.subsonic.org is registered, but could not connect to it. (HttpHostConnectException)"

tenzip was correct. The LaCie EBD was configuring itself as another network connection on my machine (actually that is how they are setup as I understand, for whatever reason). Yes this was on a Windows 7, 64 bit machine.

I not only disabled the network connection on the Lacie BD, I unplugged it (not a critical external drive in any event). As suggested, I re-saved the network settings in Subsonic, checking both the automatic configuration option as well as the "easy-to-remember" option. This worked great, and I now have the fun of being able to use the friendly name IP address.

I have not yet re-enabled the LaCie EBD. Think I will enjoy the success for awhile before I take on one more variable.

Again, thanks so much. I would I wish I would have posted the question earlier, however, in the meantime I did learn a lot about manual port forwarding, etc. Good often comes from bad. :)

Hey, glad that worked for you. Hopefully this will be fixed in a future version, so the user can select the correct network adapter when clicking "Save".

There shouldn't be any problem with re-enabling the LaCie disk now, as long as you don't click "Save" on the network settings page in SS again. I could be wrong, but I don't think it ever does it automatically, so it should stay the way you have it now.
