That I can answer as I noticed that 4.7 seemed to require less memory then 4.6
(with my library at least)

Solved - kind of...

Postby lars mars » Thu Jun 21, 2012 12:24 am

well, i wouldn't exactly say solved, since i didn't find a problem. but after kind of losing it about the speed i stopped the scan and did a new clean install, first without any change, but after the second one (basically number 3 total) it seems to work now!!!
at the moment the media scan "flies" ahead with 2000 to 2500 files a minute. that's more like it.
after install i left everything at standard settings, just changed admin, root to user and added media.

anyway thx all for your tips!

Re: BETA 4.7 - 2 MEDIA SCAN slow again

Postby lars mars » Thu Jun 21, 2012 9:50 pm

well, to early my last post. all was good to about 200k files, than it slowed gradually down to the familiar 1file/sec to finally stop at about 370k files. after restarting everything (just in case) and start a new scan it is down to about 1 or 2 files a sec again :?

getting really frustrated!

Be sure not to look at you hardware data transfer rates. I'm sure that's irrelevant.

:D had that idea before, no issues there.
anyway, i don't have time to screw further around with it at this point, back to 4.6 we go for now.
maybe install b2 on a sandbox machine over the weekend and see what happens there.

well, i finally got around to install 4.7b2 on a semi-identical machine (actually slower cpu & less ram). just moved about 8k files over to it for testing. it actually finished scanning in about 2hrs ( )

subsequent scans seemed to take just as long, what is an issue that has to be addressed in the dev. - many other proggies show that later scans can (and should be a lot faster, just having to "fill in" the new stuff)

it means for me also (i am open for other suggestions) that the insanely long scan times on big databases are not a hardware but a software prob. (i like to point out at this one, i used kplaylist for a long time - before switching to ss. mainly due to the nicer user interface). with an at the time large db (about400k files) scanning took it's time, but was usually done within a couple hours (now one could get also to the extremely comfy genre search there, but thats another issue altogether).

anyway, i am aware it is a beta version! and also that it just underwent a huge rewrite, so probs are supposed to show up. it's the nature of beta's.

so for now i stick with 4.6, but looking forward to 4.7 final and improved since i really liked what i saw sofar.

cheers, l

I would agree that 4.7 beta is much more BETA then previous versions which is not surprising considering the major rewrite that has occurred.
Also some of the "issues" that appear seem to be different for different users
(slow media scan not being one, I think that affects all users unless running on a Cray XT5  )
I would certainly suggest that users should think carefully before upgrading their main SS server and backup their 4.6 install before doing so.
However the more people that can test and give feedback will help to make 4.7 final even more perfect :)
(A number of issues discovered in 4.7b2 have already been fixed :D )

i know this is an old post, but the new 4.7 stable scanned my library (around 115k mp3's) in maybe 10 mins or so, so what ever was wrong in the beta is fixed! yay!
