Subsonic Forum

Hi all,

I'm looking to get Subsonic working on my Apple TV2, I have it on my laptop and love it, but really would like to have it on my ATV2 since I leave that on all day and it has access to my NAS etc.

I've managed to get Java VM installed on the ATV2, and have copied the standalone source over onto the ATV2. When I run subsonic.sh it appears to start, but when I goto http://<my apple TV>:4040 I get the following:

HTTP ERROR: 404

NOT_FOUND
RequestURI=/

Powered by jetty://

Doing some digging I think the issue stems from the Java VM I've managed to get running only being version 1.5.0.... So my question is, does Subsonic need Java VM 1.6.0, or could someone tell me what to adjust to get it running?

Alternatively, is there a version of Subsonic (server) roadmapped for the ATV2? I think it would be a perfect addition to the system.

If you want your atv2 to work just as a subsonic client, I suggest that you install XBMC and on top of that to install the subsonic plugin for it. Check here for info : http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=99513
Works great on my atv2 with latest firmware and XBMC eden beta 2.

I followed to apple tv install tutorial from the tutorials section to get it to work. That called for a different java distro. not sure if that was a requirement or not but that's what worked . If you check that tutorial there were a few other gotchas.

1. Check the logs in the subsonic folder to make sure it is actually loading properly and is not throwing an error about not finding java or the WAR file. I had to copy the war file to the /mnt/scratch/users/frontrow because it doesn't seem to find it in the subsonic folder for some reason. Copying it was easier than troubleshooting.

2. Make sure java is in the path and accessible. Fron SSH session, try:

Java -version


should return version info. if not check virtual links between your java libraries and the system libraries mentioned in the tutorial

3. The third snag was the need to have

-Djava.awt.headless=true \

in the line which loads subsonic-booter-jar-with-dependencies.jar The standalone version I downloaded already had this line added to the .sh file but check it anyway. This compensates for the lack of a X window system graphics component.

I still haven't been able to get subsonic to load automatically using either rc.local entry or a custom startup job in /system/libraries/startupitems. I was using info from awkwardtv.org but have not been successful. It was a helpful resource on installing NitoTV so that I can easily add CIFS / Samba network resources to the library. If you are able to get subsonic to load on boot please share how you did it. I suspect its a problem with permissions because when I try to start it without gaining root permissions with sudo -s i get an error trying to execute the subsonic.sh even through frontrow is the owner. when I have root privileges I can mount shares and start subsonic manually just fine.

I still can't understand why do you go into so much trouble to install the Subsonic server onto the atv2.
Only use case I can see is that if your NAS doesn't support loading the server there so I guess that would be a nice workaround to have atv2 as a subsonic server and the media files still on the NAS.

But if you are only interested that the atv2 acts as a client, meaning just streaming subsonic content onto your tv and/or audio equipment, your best bet is to install xbmc and the subsonic addon.

are you using a dedicated atv2 for this?

I have my media on a readynas duo which doesn't support loading the server. I'm researching ways to setup a subsonic server with my media files still on the duo. I could upgrade to a readynas pro or a computer (mac mini or atv 1st gen) but I like the atv2 option better because of the low cost and small size. I do have an atv2 right now with xbmc and I stream audio and video to my tv with that so I'm also more familiar with the atv2. I wonder if I can add subsonic server to the same atv2 or if I'm better off buying a separate one just for this purpose.

One of the nice things of having Subsonic directly on the ATV2 is that you could also use standard apps to access it.
My ATV2, although also connected to my TV, is also hooked up to my audio.
I now run it via XBMC, sometimes using the Subsonic plugin but it is not what I would like.
Till now I have also failed to get it to work in full but will have another go shortly.
