VPN/Multiple Networks

Postby AltairWolfe » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:39 am

I have found some "similar" questions on the forums, but no real answer as of yet.

My corporate network filters out ALL streaming media. I get around this by connecting to the VPN server on my computer at home, so I can watch youtube or stream content from home. I had been using a couple of other media servers that were all working fine, but recently changed to SS because of its feature set.

But I can't use it at work. :((

Internal IP address of SS server: 192.168.100.100

Once I connect to the VPN from work, the home PC while on the internal IP network can not be accessed via the 100 address. It can only be seen at 192.168.100.200. This is a limitation of the VPN, but apparently SS isn't "listening" to any other IPs? I ask this, because this worked fine with my other previous servers (MyTunesRSS and pulpTunes).

SS is working fine INSIDE the network. Works great from a non-firewalled computer OUTSIDE the network. But can't get it to respond in this weird limbo combination of IN/OUT through the VPN. Again... my previous media servers worked fine by browsing to 192.168.100.200 once connected by VPN. I'd hate to have to give up SS, cause without being able to access my music at work, not much point i it.

Thanks for the help!

When you tried to connect to SS at work did you do so over SSL? If you use SSL the work network should not be able to detect the encrypted stream as media.

Sorry this took so long, been busy with other projects.

Tried enabling SSL port 443... Now Subsonic no longer works. Just comes back with a 404 error (tried about half a dozen variations of http://, https://, url:443 and url:443/music etc...)

I assume the router is configured correctly, or I wouldn't be getting a "powered by jetty://" 404 error instead of a browser generic page not found.

Is there a different URL once you enable SSL?

NP

I never use 80 or 443 with Subsonic; there's just too much potential for conflict. If your SS works without SSL, then it should work fine with SSL. It's only a matter of getting the port forwarding correct and remembering to use the http link instead of the https when using name.subsonic.org.

If you use the guest log on at my site, http://maplegrove.subsonic.org You'll see that it immediately changes to an SSL connection.

Let me know if you are still not clear on this point.

EDIT: Also, using this method, you also shouldn't have to use a VPN connection.
