You need to install Subsonic onto your computer and point it to your music collection.

Here's the downloads page which also has basic instructions for each platform: http://www.subsonic.org/pages/download.jsp

If you run into any snags installing Subsonic, or need help with port forwarding, just post in this thread and we'll walk you through it.

i have it installed and it asks me to click on the server address. once there it asks for my username and password. i enter both and it says they are incorrect.
on the phone it asks for url. still don't know what this is.
I am a former simplify user and for the non-IT guy, this program is a pain in the ass to get set up. I hope tht is something that changes in the future

K lets go one step at a time, first we'll get Subsonic up and running, then iphone access will be a breeze.

You said you got to the main page of your Subsonic server, but were unable to login? I believe the default login is Username: admin Password: admin

Then once you're in, you go to settings at the top and you can change the password for admin and create more accounts.

Let me know when you're past that (or if you hit any snags) then we'll move on to port forwarding and setting up a dynamic dns so that you can access it easily from your phone.

K did you go to setting and change the default password + make a new account for yourself? It's in settings, then click Users and it's all right there.

Now once that's done, go to dyndns.com and sign up (it's a free service) and download their little app to the computer that you have Subsonic on (or donate to the Subsonic project and get a yourname.subsonic.org address). What dyndns does (and also subsonic's url) is they basically send your new IP address to their server any time it changes so that your url is always the same no matter how many times your internet provider changes your IP address.

Let me know when you have the accounts in order, and you've got your dynamic dns url setup, then we'll move forward.

Can you be more specific? Not really sure what you mean by downloading the updater? So you have a dyndns address set up and you installed their software?

If so, now you just need to forward Subsonic's port in your router and you're all set.

What numbers do you put in after the : to access Subsonic in your browser? That's the port number. You need to log into your router and add forwarding for that port from the outside to your computer. It's usually in a section called Applications and Gaming, or just Gaming, or something along those lines.

In order for me to give you more detailed instructions, I need to know if you're running a Mac or a PC and what brand of router you have.

These instructions are using Snow Leopard but it should be pretty similar on Leopard or Tiger. Just got to System Preferences on your Mac, then go to Network, and click on the Network connection on the left that you use for internet (should either be Ethernet or Airport, one will have a green circle next to it). Then click the Advanced button on the button right and choose the TCP/IP tab. You're gonna need to write down 2 IP addresses: IPv4 Address and Router. Now in your browser, type the router address and hit enter. That should take you to your router setup page. Hopefully you know your router password (if not, there's a good chance it set to the default so just google "your router name default password" to find it). Once in there, try to find something called Applications and Gaming or something similar. It should ask for an IP address, an external port, and an internal port. You would put your IPv4 Address from the Network settings page and port 4040 for both external and internal addresses (it's 4040 if you used the default Mac OS Subsonic settings). And if it asks, forward TCP traffic.

Then you should be able to use the dyndns address that you got to access subsonic.

Once all that's done, just put in the dyndns url, subsonic username, and subsonic password in on your iphone and you should connect right up!

Let me know if you hit any snags.

For the port range you put Subsonic's port as the start and end range. If it asks, forward TCP traffic. And there will be a (longer) text box to put the IP address of your computer that you're running Subsonic on (the local 192.168.x.x IP from the Mac network settings screen). Then you probably have to tick the check box to enable it, and click a save or apply button. Then you should be good to go.

Yes that's correct. And the URL you will put in your phone will be either your subsonic.org URL if you donated, or your dyndns.com URL if you use their service.
