Shared Hosting

Anyone ever get Subsonic running on a shared host? Who did you use? I have dreamhost but they don't support servlets. I'm dying to be able to run Subsonic on a remote server rather then having my computer on all the time.

When looking for a server, make sure to look for a VPS or Virtual Private Server. Basically, instead of just giving you a home directory and web directory on a server with a bunch of other people on it, they take that same server but install virtual machines (VMs) so that each user has their own virtual system completely separate of the other users. That means you have full root access to your "slice" as they're called, and can install whatever you want.

One host that I can personally vouch for in the US only because I've used them (not affiliated in any way) is xygenhosting.com but there are many others, just search for VPS hosting and you'll find a bunch.

The only problem with standard VPS's is their hard drive space. I pay $15 more a month than Xygen's 100GB storage virtual server for a dedicated box from a reseller of cheap OVH.com.uk boxes (from feralhosting.com also not affiliated) with 750GB of harddrive space (not to mention quad core xeon cpu, 4GB ram, and the fact that the whole machine is dedicated to me and not shared with anyone). I actually run my personal Subsonic server from my dedi and it works great. I did the math and my box could theoretically handle 280 simultaneous listeners all streaming at 320kbps. Of course just me and a few friends and family use it, but at least on the server we can all listen at the same time in full (LAME V0) quality, my home connection definitely couldn't handle that. Of course I use that box for many other things like web hosting, coding, etc so I definitely get my moneys worth. I'm not suggesting everyone run out and get a dedicated box or anything, but someone with a smaller ~50gb collection could get a cheap VPS for around 25-30 bucks a month and the dedicated boxes are always an option for those with very large collections.

So to answer you question succinctly, you can definitely run Subsonic on a shared host as long as it's a VPS (and dedi's are an option too) ;)

Thanks for the detailed answer. The only problem becomes that I have a 600GB music collection. I'm sure I could pair it down to about 100GB to put online, but thats still more then pretty much every VPS. So it looks like I would need a dedicated, and I wasn't planning on spending more then $20 a month. I'll have to keep feeling out my options, and maybe get a friend or two to go in on it with me.

Thanks again for the reply.
