IS this free or shareware / limitware?

Postby ArcAiN6 » Sun Apr 18, 2010 5:37 pm

The reason i ask, is i stumbled across a website claiming this software is release under gpl or something like that, yet once i get it up and running, i see there are ugly ads, and donate button..

Then i check to see the donate button, and it say
The suggested donation amount is €20, but you can give as much or as little as you feel like.

wich also isn't exactly true, as you have a minimum of €10. So the wording " as little as you feel like " isn't true.

this is just question i have, not mean to sound mean or anything.

the software it's totally free....but nothing prohibiting some ads and some donate button.

Think about the time spent working on the project, and choose to use the software with ugly ads, or make a donation (remove the ads), or even do not use the software...you are free, as subsonic !

You could also edit the source code to remove anything you don't want to see.

it is freeware. the 'donation' gives you access to the APIs, so you can use software on the android/iphone/ipad/ipod/desktop to connect to it and avoid using the web interface. and it removes the ads. plus it gives you your own myname.subsonic.org domain name for easy remembering.

ok.. so it is indeed limitware. thanx, i'll move along to try and find something truely free..

While i appreciate the time spent creating and maintaining the project, please don't call it free, when in fact it's limit ware.

Simply calling your fee a " donation " doesn't change the fact that you require a fee to make the software / script fully functional.

I understand people feel that I'm being rude, but the fact still remains, it's not free, it's limit ware, there is a difference, and these differences in description may seem small to you, but they are there and in use for a reason...

I can create an artificial heart, and say it's free, then wait till you have it installed to tell you it will only beat for the next 3 days unless you " donate " £500,000 to my " project ". Would that seem like a reasonable request to you? Of corse not. But that's the way " limit ware " works. and by limiting the functionality of his script in ANY way unless you buy a license, it will remain Limit ware.

While i do admire the project. And in actuality i may decide to buy the license at a later date, for now, i will continue my search for a truly unlimited free project to use.

You may find true free streaming services (vibestreamer, ...) as there are many to choose from, but will they be really unlimited if they don't have as many functions as subsonic has? Then in the relative point of view, you will have even more limited software compared to subsonic :)

Anyways, some details on webpage appear to be changed, so review and decide if something is still troubling you.

kind regards

I kind of agree with this...calling it "freeware" when it's crippled seems a little off. I'm sure some people use it to stream to another computer, but I would guess that most people want to use it to stream to a mobile device...that's what people carry around with them and listen to music on. And since we're serving from our own computers to our own devices, it's not like it costs the developer anything for us to use it that way. The minimum donation + one of the apps adds up to about $18 U.S., twice as much as Simplify Media was charging to run all the data thru their own servers.

I could see making the subdomain and ad removal bonuses for offering support, but it seems like offering bonuses is better than crippling functionality if you're going to call it "freeware". That said, I probably will make a "donation" when my trial period is up, assuming I keep finding it useful, because I would want to support it...and, well, I guess I won't have a choice if I want to keep using it!

Calling it free is a flat out lie and the person that put that is a flat out liar. Requiring money, calling it payment or a donation, is not free at all. Liar. I'm disappointed since I bought an iPhone app before realizing I had been lied to.

If you can afford the iPhone you could problably afford to donate $10. It's not like the someone tried to scam you. It's well documented: http://www.subsonic.org/pages/apps.jsp
