if i don't have wifi available... can i use my 3g network?

Postby tortugalechuga » Wed Apr 21, 2010 12:07 am

great application!! i love that i can listen to my HUGE music collection, without having to download ALL of it to my phone directly! it's amazing. <3

just one question though... is there a way to stream my music without having to use wifi? if i'm out and about, i don't always have wifi available... i understand i can use the offline feature, but what about music i haven't yet streamed? can i use my 3g network?

i've already tried to poke around some of the settings to see if i could figure it out, but maybe no such setting exists??

anyway, let me know if this is possible, if not, i recommend adding this feature in the future (if possible that is). =)

thank you

The Android app, iSub, and Z-Subsonic all support streaming over 3G without any extra settings. So you're set regardless of which one you have :)

well thats cool, good to know... now if only i can get it to work... =/

when i'm at home, and connect my droid to my wireless network, the app works great, no problems... however when i disable my wifi, and try to stream my music, it tells me there is a network error... so naturally, this is why i thought it only works when wifi is enabled and connected.

also, i just learned a little bit ago... i tried enabling wifi and connecting to another wireless network away from home, and it too gave me a network error. but when i got home and connected to my wireless network, it worked fine again.

and yes, in both cases, my computer was on and awake, if that matters, which i'm sure it does.

any thoughts?? maybe i'm missing something? =/

Ahh sounds like Subonic's port is not forwarded correctly in your router, so your router is doing what it was built for and throwing the packets away before they reach your Subsonic server.

Do a quick search on the forum for "port forwarding" and a lot of answers should pop up. If you run into any trouble, let me know the OS you are running (mac, windows, linux) and what type of router you have and I'll do my best to assist.

thats what i thought the problem was originally. i've already went on my routers website and messed with the port forwarding. i never could fully understand that concept, haha but i did try...

when i logged in subsonic the port number in the text box was 80. but i was already using port 80 for my ps3, (does that matter?) anyway so i changed the port number to a random number, i chose 90, and i logged on to my router (linksys) and set the port range start and end both with 90. i have difficulty understanding the tcp/udp/both, but nonetheless i've tried all three, haha
actually now that i think about it, i think i have the wrong ip address... how do i know what ip to use? (192.168.0.?) my first thought was to use my default gatway...

am i even on the right track?

o i have windows 7 by the way.

and thank you for your help! <3

Yes you're really close. You need to forward TCP traffic to your computer's IP address. The gateway address is the address on your local network that is the "gateway" to the Internet, so that would be your router's address. The IP you need to forward to is the IP of your Windows 7 machine on your home network. To find this, on your computer hit Windows Key + R to pop open the run box. Type cmd and hit enter to open the command prompt. Then just type ipconfig and hit enter. That should tell you the IP address. Then just put that IP and the port you want to forward (90 should be fine, just make sure Subsonic is set to use that port. If not, forward the port that Subsonic is set to use) and you should be golden.

I'll post up with a full explanation of port forwarding and the difference between TCP and UDP later when I have a minute, have to get ready to head out to dinner or I'd do it now

that would be cool. =)

until then, i did changed the IP address, to the IPv4 address, is that right? it's still not working for me... i even changed the port back to 80 on both the subsonic page and my router, thinking maybe that had something to do with it, but that didn't work either... i don't understand whats wrong...

i noticed on the susonic localhost page, under the port, it says status: no router found.... does that mean something specific?

ok... i have a new set of problems now, =(

my dad ended up getting a new router... netgear

and now in my subsonic page under network settings it says "Successfully forwarding public port 80 to local port 80." and "Successfully registered web address." WOO, got that part working =)

but now... my droid won't connect at all. not even locally, on my home network. keeps giving me a network error... it worked before, at least locally...

what do you think the issue is now?

and i'm trying to read the forums that are already posted, but it seems non of whats already said is working for me, or i maybe don't understand it =(

I have excatly the same issue as above, I have been at it for a fair few days now, on my local wireless network subsonic works great between mac / PC and my iphone 3gs but when I try to connect over 3g on both isub and z-subsonic its not connecting, neither will it connect outside of my local network via other PC's. I have tried port forwarding but to be honest I think this is where the fault is? also I read somwhere that a 192.**** address is just a local ip. This is the address that appears in my browser after I type in my ***.subsonic.org address I registered after donation. I have a BTHomeHub V2 router and I am using port 80. and I am using subsonic on a Windows XP SP 2 machine, If someone could just PLEASE, PLEASE tell us where to put the port numbers and the ip address, I hope that could be it! Thankyou to anyone who can help.

Fingers crossed!

:D

Sorry to be a pain and jump on board someone's problems here, thought I would just add image of my BTHub Port forwarding configuration page, so hopefully someone out there can show me where to put the info?? I have already assigned UpNP
thank you folks, hopefully we can both get sorted and enjoy this great application!

that would be nice, (being able to enjoy the application), but it seems like no one is trying to help me anymore =/
i've been trying to figure this thing out for a week now. picking apart this forum to try and figure it out myself, but so far no such luck. i'm no computer expert but i sort of understand the idea... but it's still not working, so i'm starting to get frustrated.

if i would have known it would be this difficult to figure out i wouldn't have donated quite so early... =/

Sorry I didn't forget about you guys, just been really busy over the last few days

@soulshare: Is that BTHub router your wireless router, or is that your ISP's modem which is then plugged into a wireless (or other) router? It seems like it only has spaces to put in the port, but not a local IP address to forward it to. You may need to forward the port there, and also on another router (just guessing from looking at the pic you uploaded). If you can give me more specific information about your setup, I should be able to help more.

@tortugalechuga: Can you tell me the specific model of netgear router? They make too many to know what to do based on brand alone. It's possible that the automatic UPnP port forwarding is not working even though it thinks it is. If you are trying to access your *.subsonic.org address on your local network it will still go out to your public internet address so it's basically the same as accessing it over 3G. Not sure why it was working before on your last router.

I know how frustrating this port forwarding stuff can be. Unfortunately, every router does it differently and some are more of a pain to setup than others. It's the step that either sets you back a week, or just works right away.

no it's ok, sorry if i seemed a little impatient, i figured you were busy or something, i just wanna be done with it already, haha =p, i'm sure you can understand that, haha

my router is a model WNR2000

i thought that maybe the automatic UPnP only thought it was working as well, based on another forum post i read, so i tried opening the port manually, no such luck.

though one thing i did notice, don't know if it means anything... my local IP is a 192... # and thats what i had the port forward to, but when i went to my *.subsonic.org address on my computer, the address changed to a different 192 number looking like http://192.*.*.*/index.view
so i thought, maybe thats the port i'm supposed to forward to, so i tried that, no suck luck there either (on a different computer, going to *.subsonic.org does nothing and gives an error)

i also tried messing with the DNS but i'm not too familiar with that concept either, but i figured if the port isn't forwarding right the DNS won't help.

so thats sort of where i'm at so far...

Ahh from what you're saying, it seems like the subsonic.org address is pointing to the wrong address. It should be picking up your home IP address. This is a service Sindre provides, so I can't be much help here. Maybe send him a PM on the forum?

In the interim you can try out dyndns (it's free) and see if it works. You just download their tiny app that runs in the background and sign up for an account, and the app keeps them in sync with your home IP (basically exactly what Subsonic is doing with the .org address -- or I guess not doing at the moment lol). If the dyndns app doesn't point to the correct address either, then maybe there's a problem with your setup preventing them from getting the correct address.

ah, ok, that makes sense, kinda stupid though, =/

alright well i guess i'll send sindre a message, i was thinking about sending him a message a few days ago, but i figured he would get lots of messages, so i didn't want to message him until i knew it was necessary.

anway, i did download the dyndns app and create an account, and it doesn't help, but it seems to be doing what it's suppose to be doing. when i go to my dyndns address on my phone, the address changes to my_internet_ip:80/subsonic/wap ...but just sits there and doesn't actually load anything ... it was worth a shot though.
