M4A playback seems broken - 4.0.beta1

Postby mhendu » Fri Apr 23, 2010 3:16 pm

I just updated to the latest Beta. Yesterday when I tried playing M4A files they would play correctly but not report on the time played on the track and I couldn't skip to any section of the song. Today it simply doesn't work at all - the log shows that it's transcoding but the player won't play the file. Any thoughts?

OK, it's not every M4A file - just some of them. Other M4A files work just fine, but on one particular album they won't play but they did work yesterday when I was running the prior version, it just wouldn't allow me to seek or display the time counter correctly...

4.0 supports native playback of M4A files, so try turning off the m4a>mp3 transcoding and see how it goes.

Works, thanks! Limited upload bandwidth will restrict the ability to play m4a without transcoding though, so hopefully that will be fixed for all m4a files..

Wondering if it will be possible to have it transcode TO m4a now that playback is supported... i.e. if you have an all aac collection to just downsample the aac keeping the same format

That sounds plausible - it's weird that it transcodes some M4A files fine and not others, though. Maybe because of VBR? I have an album that is V0 M4A and it doesn't transcode, but one that is all 256 Kbps transcodes just fine...

Err, or maybe not? I had some problems indexing my collection and now after I've indexed the collection the file seems to transcode OK even as a VBR M4A. Really not sure what's going on there but I won't complain if it's working! :) Thanks for this fantastic program, very happy with it so far.

OK just kidding, transcoding worked one time for the VBR M4A and now I can't get it to work again. Sorry!

m4a's do not play back for me if I disable m4a > mp3 conversion in 4.0 Beta.
I really need this to work since all of my transcoded m4as sound super slow and low.

first of all, thanks for all the constant development. subsonic is amazing.

i am having trouble playing all m4a files in 4.0b1 as well (or at least all the ones I've tried) . . . either with transcoding on (worked in 3.9) or with transcoding off. I have max bitrate set to unlimited (but limiting it didn't help either). the log file doesn't seem to give any errors one way or the other.

for what it's worth... the one slight difference between the two is that when I start a song with transcoding off, the "play" icon in the flash player changes to a "pause" icon (but the time doesn't change and the song doesn't play). when I start a song with transcoding on, that icon switches to the pause icon for about 3 seconds, then goes back to a play icon. but neither setting actually plays the song.

mp3s work fine. flac works fine. have to go back to 3.9 until a fix. . .
let me know if I can provide any more info

What Flash version are you running? Right-click on the player and select "About Adobe Flash Player". I'm running version 10.0.42.34.

Thanks,

I'm running 10.0.42.34 as well. is there anything else I can tell you? logs or offending files? (I assume it's not the files fault given that no files work...)

fwiw, I'm running the standalone version of subsonic 4.0b1 on a OS X 10.4 server.

Weird.

What browser are you using? Have you tried clearing the browser cache? Also, can you go to the About page in Subsonic and check the version and build number?

Thanks

I'm using 4.0.beta1 (build 1471)

I've tried it in opera (10.10), safari (4.0.5), chrome (for mac), and firefox (3.6) on my macbook pro client, all of which leads me to believe that it is indeed something wrong on the server end.

I'm going to make a duplicate installation without all of the previous users and settings to see if that helps... and I will report back. (obviously, that won't be a great fix as I'd prefer not to lose all of my user data . . . but it might help us troubleshoot).
