Folder management

Postby twiffy » Mon May 10, 2010 3:55 pm

This may seem like a small detail, but I would like it if, when adding a folder, there was an option to either list the folder itself, or to directly list the folder's contents, as is currently the default.

I have a lot of hard drives, with my music stored in one location, and other audio, like lectures and audio books, stored elsewhere. I'd prefer if Subsonic could let me keep these separate. But when I add my music folder and my audio book folder, Subsonic mixes all the contents together, so that if I want to find an audio book, I have to scroll through ALL my music and other audio. It takes a while.

I've thought about reorganizing my folders as a workaround to this. All that needs to be done is the directory in question has to be placed within another directory (with the same name, if you want) and it should work. Of course, having the software be able to do this without any clever tricks would be nice.

My thought for the workaround (which I've not put into effect yet) would be to rename my Audiobooks folder from 'books/' to 'books/!books/' or 'books/_books', so as to list them at the top of the file list. I'm not yet sure if this'll work.

hello,

i don't know if i really understand the problem, i hope so.;)

i solve nearly the same problem like that:

itunes
---music
------A-Ha
------Compilations
------Celine
------subsonic_exclude.txt (with the line "Compilations")

And in the folder management i have two entries, one for "itunes/music" (without compilations) und the second is for "itunes/music/compilations".

so i have 2 folder could be select separately an the left dropdownbox, although the compilations folder is one of the all music folders.

maybe that's it you are looking for?

greetings

Yeah, I actually did the same thing -- put everything in a parent folder and moved all my files to one HD -- but I don't like it! I'm hoping this can be resolved in the next version, so that I don't have to artificially introduce new folders.

file and folder management

Postby sainjiv » Thu Jun 10, 2010 1:41 pm

I have come across one software called Organyze which was given to me for testing. They have done away with regualr directory management of string files and folders. They have introduced labelling system which is like a virtual folder. one file or folder can have as many labels as one wishes. they can be arranged in tree or flat structure. The beauty is the instant search that is as intuitive as google.

I was just about to post an Idea about this when I saw this thread..

Here is what I did..

I have two folders for music. (There could be more for other things)
1. "Full Albums" (complete artwork and all)
2. "Compilations and the rest" ( everything that is not a standard album. )

And then there are folders:
3. "Incoming"
4. "Links"

In links are soft-links (shortcuts) to the other 3 folders.
The soft-links (shortcuts) are named
"AA----Full Albums----"
"AA__Compilations and the rest__"
"incoming"

Its obvious what each link is for right!

In subsonic I set up the two music folders as normal and the "Links" folder too.

Now I get this:

    Shortcuts

    Incoming

    A
    AA----Full Albums----
    AA__Compilations and the rest__

followed my embarrassing obligatory possession of Abba.

It seems the "Incoming" folder is coded as special somehow so it goes at the top.

Then when you open the "AA----Full Albums----" you get all the album art and a full list of that one folder all in one go in the center.

Thats what you want right?

Now there is one problem.. you saw it coming too I bet. When the the search kicks off you get all the music indexed twice!! Once for the normal location and once for the location through the "Links" folder with the soft-links ( shortcuts.)
The only thing to do at the moment is to turn off "Links" share in subsonic when doing a search to update thing.

But it works well for me.
It is we who live that the music may play.

You listen to rock or pop music, may be.

But for electronic music compilations gets more than 30% in my collection.
I even sort music by labels.

It can be simply recognized by VA / V.A. / Various Artists in folder name, but this is not a must.

Solution - any album (not track) can have defined:
- artist for it - so we can name folder with dj Name as artist or simply put VA
- cover, to have no problems with multiple scans in folder
- year / rls date for sorting
