"Smart" Playlists

Postby rattboi » Thu May 13, 2010 9:38 pm

I think it'd be cool if we could have dynamic playlists that were based on queries instead of static entries. For example, a "Newest" playlist that had the 20 newest albums.

I realize this may take a decent amount of work, so if this isn't in the cards, I'd be somewhat happy with just a "Newest" playlist instead of a bunch of query stuff.

The main reason I think this would be useful is that now that apps like iSub and z-subsonic are available, I've been using my iPhone to stream from my server at home a LOT. Sometimes, I may get 5-6 new albums and add them, and then go for a drive, and I can't remember everything I added. If there were a dynamic playlist of newest albums, I could make sure I don't miss some of these albums.

Thanks for the time.

I do a LOT of this sort of thing in iTunes, it was one of the first things I looked for in Subsonic. Please consider adding it. Even if they don't "live update", it would be useful to have a query and refresh manually and/or on a timer.

Smart Playlist is a major feature that's missing from SubSonic.

I would love to be able to set a +Genre = Pop and play all the Pop music in my collection. Adding additional arguments such as +Year >=2006 to limit it to playing only newer Pop songs. Oh the wonderful possibilities..

Hey Guys,

I have implemented a work around to accomplish this. IMO itunes rocks with Genius playlists the steps below will allow you to export your smart or genius playlists.

1. Create your smart playlists or genius playlists in itunes
2. right click on the playlists and select Export
3. Correct the paths so subsonic recognizes them
3a. for me I do a find and replace and change K:\ to /home/music/etc/ and \ to / since i run itunes in windows and subsonic in linux.
4. import the playlists into your playlist folder.

Semi workaround.

I use itunes ONLY for playlist management.

I have a nightly automated task that runs that launches itunes export:

http://www.ericdaugherty.com/dev/itunesexport/

*edit* I used the .net version. Had a problem with version 2.0...don't remember what it was though.

and I just delete a bunch of the playlists I don't need exported.

Code: Select all
del *.m3u
itunesexport.exe -outputdir="\\Fileserver\shareddocs\My Music\Playlists" -library="\\Fileserver\shareddocs\iTunes\Itunes Library.xml"
del music.m3u
del audiobooks.m3u
del books.m3u
del "itunes dj.m3u"
del iphone.m3u
del genius.m3u
del "Top 25 most played.m3u"
del mobile.m3u

+1. Subsonic really deserves this. I know we can do all sorts of things from the outside (which is cool, too), but smart playlists rock. We even have some pre-defined smart lists today:
Random | Recently added | Top rated | Most played | Recently played

+1 for autoplaylists (foobar2000) or smartplaylists (iTunes apparently, brrrr...)
I miss those nice playlists from foobar that never become outdated or orphaned.

You are right. Although technically no real playlists, but with a few lines of code the data those views use can be made into a plalist for sure.
